Fred was created to honor beer writer and historian Fred Eckhardt. Fred is a big inspiration for me and many other brewers. Fred’s work in all-grain brewing and beer styles helped me become a better brewer. Fred the beer is a deep golden color. It is made with aromatic and rye malts and includes 10 different hop varieties in an effort to incorporate the whole world into this beer. It has 10% alcohol by volume and 65 IBUs. We hope that Fred will inspire you to share your knowledge with others as Fred has with us. (Click on the picture for a larger view.) Wondering about the age of your Fred? Draft. A-Caramel, brown sugar, mild pine. A- Light bronze color, slightly hazy liquid, off white head. T- Caramel, malt, pine, brown sugar, subtle dark fruit, slightly bitter. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- Just can't ever seem to really get behind the hype of most Hair of the Dog beers, especially the big ones. This wasn't near as complex as I thought it would be and seemed to lack depth. Tasted like a bland barleywine or an old double ipa. Honestly a pass for me.

According to HotD site this was bottled in September 2011, almost 10 years ago. Pours mostly clear, amber rather than golden, and an off white head with some retention. Aroma's: sweet, soft fruit, light raisin. Retronasal it's sweetish, fruity, bitter. Flavour is moderate sweet with a firm bitterness. Medium bodied, good carbonation. Long finish, quite bitter.

Bottle at home. Three years old. Pours a clear bronze colour with no head and just some small light beige lacings. Aroma of pine, caramel, brown sugar, creme brulee, cognac and oak. Some spices. Flavour of pine, oak, rum, grapefruit, caramel and warming alcohol in the end. Some dried apricot. Has a silky mouth feel, rich body and a medium bitterness. Rich all the way, and surprsingly bitter after three years.

Flaska från Mikkeller & Friends bottleshop, batch 96, gissningsvis 2016. Gulfärgad klar med hög vit krona. Honung, ljus malt, kandisocker, apelsinskal. Relativt hög beska. Vissa belgiska drag. Old school, fin och klar amerikansk barley wine.

On tap at Fakin Craft Beer Bar, Zagreb. Clear dark golden, minimal head. Aroma is caramel, syrup, brandy, ripe fruit, dried fruit: figs and prunes. Toast. Hop aroma is slightly harsh, soon giving way to much softer malt notes. Strong, oily, brandy-like. Sweet, alcohol well hidden. Light spice, lots of dried fruit. Raisins, figs. Honey. Medium body, moderate finish. Rich and smooth.

Bottle from 2007. Pours hazy dark muddy brown with no head. Aromas of caramel, fainted hops, dark jam, light salmiak, heavy malt, dark ripe fruits. Taste is malty, caramel, faded hops, raisins, dates, bitter licorice-like finish. Such a good balance!

Tap at Craftheads. Blonde. Wow, lovely taste. Rounded, booze is there but hidden. Very smooth. Grainy, but sweet, orchard fruit, sticky sweetness. Treacle/golden syrup. Very easy drinking. Lovely stuff.
