Materfamilias is Latin for ‘female head of the house.’ No other beer we make commands as much attention and devotion as she. From the brewhouse to the barrels, your Mother’s remains at the service of this exquisite imperial stout. Roasted malt brings rich flavors of chocolate and dried fruit. In the aging process, the beer’s interaction with the wood of bourbon, rye whiskey, rum, and brandy barrels dictates the composition of the final blend. Materfamilias cannot be rushed. It cannot be forced. It brooks no compromise. The result is a stout of such complexity and nuance that you, too, will recognize the authority of your Materfamilias.

Panda at home, thanks to the Wingmane, 15/01/23. Black with a tan covering that veers edgewards. Nose is dark malts, spice, bourbon, molasses, hint of liquorice, alcohol, coconut shavings. Taste comprises dried fruit rinds, toffee, bourbon, oak, rum barrel, spice, chocolate pot, herbal notes. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel, semi drying close with a balanced rise of alcohol. Decent punchy impy, the various barrels keep the sweetness in check.

Panda 🐼 at home big thanks to Wingman dave. An oily dark mahogany brown coloured pour with no head. Aroma is medium sweet, oily, alcohol, oily chocolate, paint. Flavour is composed of woody roast, chocolate syrup, vanilla, paint, hot alcohol. Palate is oily, sticky, solvent, mellow carbonation. Not good.

Pour is a motor oil thick black with a medium tan head. Aroma is all oak barrel. Lots of vanilla and whisky and charred wood. Flavor is again all things barrel. Lots of burnt caramel with vanilla, roasted malt and plenty of oak woody goodness left on the tongue. Not as thick of mouthfeel as GI bourbon county stout but this has almost more barrel flavor and is half the price. Real good stuff here, it would behoove you to get a few bottles of this if you can't get it in your area.

Pour is a motor oil thick black with no head at all. Aroma is a real nice bourbon barrel with some cinnamon and black licorice. Flavor is a real nice bourbon with some vanilla and cocoa. I don't get much sherry, maybe a dark cherry, but I do get a huge sweet molasses from the rum. This is almost the perfect barrel aged beer. No alcohol is felt and you get a little from each barrel. Super flavorful and outstanding!

Got in a BIF from jdell15. 12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/5/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, fudge, marshmallow, molasses, raisin, plum, cherry, sherry, rum, brandy, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, smoke, coffee, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, raisin, and spirit barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, fudge, marshmallow, molasses, raisin, plum, cherry, sherry, rum, brandy, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, smoke, coffee, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Very mild roast bitterness and spirit/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, fudge, marshmallow, molasses, dark fruit, cherry, sherry, rum, brandy, bourbon, toasted oak, dark/brown bread, light coconut/smoke, leather, tobacco, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, raisin, and spirit barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and spirit/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Mild carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is is fantastic. Minimal chalky roast, oak tannins, or dryness. Minimal warming alcohol for 11%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged imperial stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa, raisin, and spirit barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Super rich and complex, with perfect balance and integration of the barrels. Never overwhelming on fruitiness, even with the added raisins in the base beer. Loved this just as much as the single barrel brandy. Very similar with some additional underlying spirit complexities from the mixed barrels. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle courtesy of RobertDale, thank you! Motor oil black color, small brown head. Aroma has toasted coconut, vanilla, stewed prunes, burnt espresso. Taste is rich dark chocolate and coffee, edge of whiskey. Delicious. Extra appearance point for getting the name past the TTB.

12 oz. Bottle in a trade with Matt B. Pitch black color, thin lasting tan head Aroma is milk chocolate, coffee, subtle vanilla hints, mild bourbon.

The flavor has a nice barrel character throughout the sip. Good roasted backbone. Flavor is deep, dark fruits, chocolate, Bourbon, sherry, vanilla, and ending on oak. Creamy texture and fuller velvet body. Sometimes I am still surprised. This stout was a VERY nice surprise. Finely crafted.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is interesting with a moderately strong raisin note and some lighter chocolate notes. Some burnt sugar notes and hints of roast and leather. Some light alcohol spice. Some prune and cherry notes. Pours black with a medium sized, moderately thick, dark tan head that recedes to a thin film that lingers on the edges for quite some time. Faint lacing moderately long legs. Flavor is moderately to fairly sweet with quite a bit of chocolate. Some medium light raisin notes and some light roast. Medium bitterness. Some medium light alcohol spice. Some light vanilla notes with lingering chocolate. Hints of berry and prune. Mouthfeel is full bodied and somewhat creamy with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty nice, high alcohol beer. Lots of raisin and dark fruit in the aroma but a lot more chocolate and malt notes in the flavor. A bit too much alcohol for me, but still pretty enjoyable.
