[2/20/15] Draught at Societe in San Diego. Clear deep reddish amber. Estery aroma of overripe fruits and caramel. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, fruit esters, a phenolic touch and an alcoholic note. Medium-bodied.

On tap at Societe, pours a deep dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of dark earthy malts and bread. Flavour brings out earthy malts, salty notes and dry earthy hops. Pretty solid stuff. Dry and well-balanced.

On draught at Stone World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido. Pours a clear dark brownish-amber color with a medium foamy tan head that dissipates gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, malt and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of earthy yeast, plum and caramel malt. The finish is fruity and malty. Decent overall.

Pours a dark, reddish brown. It’s just a bit too dark to assess clarity. Small beige head. No lacing and it mostly fades to a ring of foam after a minute. The aroma had earth, molasses, raisins, doughy bread, caramel and a bit of chocolate. It smells sweeter than it tastes. The taste is drier than expected, though not off for the style. It has a woody dryness with a sweet and fruity finish. Raisins, apples, dates, brown sugar and mushrooms at the end. Carbonation is somewhat high for the style. It’s also rather light for the abv and style. Interesting beer, though it doesn’t quite win me over.

On tap at the source. Pours with a deep mahogany hued body with a small off-white head. Decent clarity and lace. Aromas are of dark fruits, low roast, leather, raisins, prunes, esters, medium alcohol and dates. Flavors show medium roast, leather, prunes, earthy notes. Dark fruits, medium malt. A bit too much roast for my taste. Medium hoppy. Lively bubbles, dry finish, medium bodied and slightly warming.
