500ml bottle. Jet black colour with late awakening, average, thick, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Slightly roasty, dark malty as well as caramel malty aroma with BA reinforcement, notes of oak, leather, vanilla, dark caramel, hazelnut-infused white coffee, a touch of treacle, honey, nougat. Taste is sweet-ish, caramel and dark malty with heavy BA support, notes of caramel, dark caramel, a touch of burnt caramel, some toffee, oak, vanilla, hazelnut-infused white coffee, treacle, honey, some warming alcohol. Viscous texture, smooth and soft, tacky palate, fine and soft carbonation. Rich and complex, variegated and slightly oscillating, but neither fully integrated nor really harmonious, impressive but not fully convincing; finally more brute force than refinement.

5-oz. pour on tap at The Grill Next Door. Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, thin ring of beige head and no lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and more subtle rye contribution. Taste is strong rye, including a bit of alcohol burn, with roasted malts poking through late. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with thin, velvety smooth texture, soft carbonation but with alcohol burn that's too strong to ignore and sweet, fairly dry finish as taste. Overall, the rye is too high in the mix and obscures the base stout both in flavor and mouthfeel. There's a velvety, comforting stout that wants to express itself but the rye won't let it. It improves as it warms with some dark fruit notes but the rye is still too strong.

2018 bottle. Black. Caramel, soft roast, maple syrup and rye in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with soft roast, licorice and whisky. Hint of oak maybe. Slightly alcoholic. Hops still noticeable. Full bodied. Nice, good beer, but not world class.
