A 9% ABV tripel IPA, BFF is made with five pounds per barrel of Falconer’s Flight and Centennial hops. This beer is a proper hop bomb: first-wort hopped, hop bursted, and double dry hopped for all your lupulus cravings. Of course, that wasn’t enough, so we fermented it with the “clean” Orval yeast strain to put it over the top.

A full, well laced white head on a clear straw body. A mild nose has elements of citrus and tropical fruit with a touch of yeast. A lot less taste and bitterness than expected. Some Grapefruit, lemon and tropical fruit hoppiness, but a lot less than advertised. Honeyed malt, some grain a touch of yeast round out a well balanced but disappointing taste profile. A bit of an ouch on the claim to be a hop bomb. There are nonetheless some nice fruity hop elements at work here.

Mostly clear, bright golden coloured body with a slight honey and mild copper glow and only around 10 per cent opacity, with a thin, single centimetre tall off-white head that fades fast. Aroma of bright yeast, bread, alcohol, oranges, coriander seed, bananas, bubble gum and yes, some alcohol and honey sweetness at the end. Medium-bodied; Rich malty and grassy notes show at first with a big kick of coriander seed and flowers, along with a heavy bit of curacao and some additional sugars from stone fruits, like apricots. Aftertaste is very complex, with the big yeast and maltiness hitting and then some additional bitterness and sweetness right behind, from honey and flowers, but no real hops here at all, it seems. Overall, while I'm not sure what the problem is keeping OFF three simple letters from a can, this isn't an IPA by any stretch, and if it tried, is a good representation of a real Belgian Triple from America. However, trying to 'fit' this in that category saddens me, in terms of what consumers must like seeing. Odd, as I love Trips, and this is good, but labeled badly and very expensive from New York! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Carmine Street Beers in New York (Greenwich Village), New York on 04-December-2021 for US$8,69, canned on 27-October-2021 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 09-January-2022.

April 2017 bomber drunk 4/27/17.
Hazy copper with a very large, well-retained, white head.
The nose begins very cleanly with light peach, apple and pepper from the yeast. Lots of honey behind it, though it’s not rich and seems quite highly attenuated, at least from the nose. Surprisingly quite light on the hops given how much they claim to have added. I get no juiciness whatsoever and it’s mostly just perfume, hard citrus rind, lemon and a bit of dank spiciness. Light bubble gum and vanilla on the finish seem a little tacky and it’s really quite difficult to wrap your head around what’s going on here.
Unfortunately, the picture becomes more clear in the mouth. A hard, specialty malt-like texture takes shape despite fairly engaging carbonation (and a malt profile seemingly very light on specialty malts, given the color). Extremely brutish hops aren’t so much resinous as they are completely monotonous and austerely bitter. Grapefruit, lemon rind and light pine leave little room for any juice or much flavor at all, to be honest. Peach-bubble-gum-vanilla-like esters immediately scream of pseudo-Belgian brewing and any time the beer is on the verge of becoming interesting and tropical fruit-laden, hot esters and alcohol immediately put an end to it. Even if this is an Orval yeast, they’ve handled it very poorly here. All that said, the hard, unrelenting texture and complete and utter lack of malt depth is still the biggest offender here. Poured almost the entire bottle out. Very disappointing as I think this had a lot of potential.

Pours slightly hazed gold into a snifter. Bright white head with medium retention recedes leavings spot lacing. Wintergreen and menthol aromas. Sweet caramel and hot phenols upfront turning to sour vegetables in the medium length finish.

Draft at RnH-West. Unclear golden pour, thin white head, average-plus, streaky lacing. Really clean, fruity, and crisp. Light dry. Citrus and yeasty spice. Kinda feels somewhere between an IPA and a Saison. Actually quite nice.

Draught @ Ginger Man. Slughtly cloudy golden with foamy off-white head, very faint citrus aroma, medium carbonation, medium bitter orange peel taste, smooth body, long orange peel finish. Well covered alcohol content, and smooth body.

22 oz bottle shared, thanks Alex/Tyler! Hazy yellow orange with off-white head. Aromas of funk, herbs, banana, citrus, floral notes. Tastes of funk, banana, floral notes, citrus, herbs. Medium body with a dry finish. Interesting but the flavors don’t mesh well.

The sampler, brooklyn tap: pours hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma is citrus and a bunch of resin. Taste is relatively bitter. Nice body. Tastes very fresh.
