In far-away 2006, in a beer hall in Philly, at the end of a long road, we share our first beer with a Friestaat Bayern Brewer enharmonically named; Wolfgang. At stake, over a Pils, was whether or not Lagunitas would purchase from him a new 80bbl brewhouse. It was a lot of money. Playing Sileus to my Brewery’s chariot, together- with the benefit of the lager- we forded the emotional-economic crevasse and commissioned the brewhouse. Unforseeable at the time would be the need for even more brewing capacity today. So, for the umpteenth time in our short history, we lurch down that increasingly familiar road towards new brewhouses, fermentation tanks, and the like. The actual installation bears a strong resemblance to a heart transplant, on an awake patient, performed on the backside of a galloping horse, or at very least in tow behind Dionysus’ trustworthy Silenus. Some is good, more is better. The good news is; It’s still us! Call us. 707.769.4495

The initial small and taste is great. The follow through lessens a bit but it's really good.

Hazy amber, good malts, thick but not heavy, toffee and vinous, a kiss of what seems vaguely American hops, somewhat resinous and spicy but still just a kiss of them.

Clear golden coloured body with a tint of copper and bronze and a perfect, two to three centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of toasted malt, wheat, yeast, bread, toffee, caramelised sugars, grain and a dose of earth - quite pungent with some alcohol scents as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive toasted malt and grain at first with a big dose of alcohol, some sugars form toffee and fruits noticeable along with a deep and quite pungent grain and yeast kick near the end. Aftertaste shows some darker and more intense flavours with the alcohol really coming out, some yeast and bread notes and finishing with the wheat and earthy malt flavours. Overall, a nice and flavourful wheat, but too much pungency and not enough character and complexity make this about average, perhaps actually on the other side of average in a bad way. Still, nice to sample the style, although I do detest large format bottles. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 31-May-2017 for US$5,81 sampled at home in Washington on 22-June-2017.

Bomber - hazy copper - like most Lagunitas beers, this does not taste much like it is supposed to for the style - it’s indistinct - moderately sweet, moderately bitter, light notes of dough, green raisin - a bit of spice on the end - nothing offensive - nothing off - just another safe, uninspiring Lagunitas effort.
