In far-away 2006, in a beer hall in Philly, at the end of a long road, we share our first beer with a Friestaat Bayern Brewer enharmonically named; Wolfgang. At stake, over a Pils, was whether or not Lagunitas would purchase from him a new 80bbl brewhouse. It was a lot of money. Playing Sileus to my Brewery’s chariot, together- with the benefit of the lager- we forded the emotional-economic crevasse and commissioned the brewhouse. Unforseeable at the time would be the need for even more brewing capacity today. So, for the umpteenth time in our short history, we lurch down that increasingly familiar road towards new brewhouses, fermentation tanks, and the like. The actual installation bears a strong resemblance to a heart transplant, on an awake patient, performed on the backside of a galloping horse, or at very least in tow behind Dionysus’ trustworthy Silenus. Some is good, more is better. The good news is; It’s still us! Call us. 707.769.4495

Bottle. Pours cloudy golden with light beige foamy head, citrusy malt aroma, high carbonation, lightly bitter malty taste with citrusy flavor and a bit of vanilla, thin body, longish malty finish. Interesting brew but I wasn’t sure whether I liked it much.

Bottle. Banana, orange, clove, sour milk, caramel malt and hay aroma. Hazy copper with moderate off-white head. Moderately sweet candi sugar, banana, orange, light clove, caramel malt, and moderately bitter hay flavor. Good body - ABV well hidden. Okay - just a bit too sweet and not malty enough for me.

Bottle at home. It pours a honey golden color with a large off white head. The aroma has banana bread, a little honey and faint hints of clove. The flavor has some apricot, banana and light clove. Full bodied and sweet with a lightly spicy finish. A good Weizenbock. Not like the doppel sticky they tried to pass off as a doppelbock.

Bomber sent by Lagunitas for review: The beer has a strong malty smell, with some of its alcohol right in the nose. It pours a puffy white head over a deep golden body. The taste is strongly alcoholic, but there’s plenty of malt to go with it. A slight side taste of the banana and clove esters that comes with a weizen beer, but not as noticeable. After a couple more sips; make that many more sips; I get a bit of graininess at the sides of my tongue. If this is cellared, some of the yeast might drop out to the bottom, but a malty, estery beer like this is best enjoyed in season.

$5.79 Bomber, Wine Warehouse. Pours slightly hazy golden-amber with a small off-white head. Nice citrus hop aroma: grapefruit, lemon zest, pineapple. Almost-IPA-like. Flavors is also almost-IPA-like, but changes about midway through. Grapefruit peel and pulp, pineapple, minor spice, a little grass, perhaps some yeast. Good.

Bottle: Slightly hazy, golden-yellow with a tall beige head. Tropical.....pineapple, tangerine, banana aroma. Very citrusy, almost like a really fruity IPA scent. Sweet, not-quite-ripe banana, mixed fruit pulp flavour. Chewy body....barely a hint of the alcohol. Very tasty and interesting.

Bottle at home from local supermarket. This is an odd duck of a beer. Golden orange pour. Nose is honey and malt. Tastes of light earthy malt, honey, caramel, touch of grapefruit, some banana. Sweeter finish light palate. Not sure what’s going on with this one.

22 ounce bottle.mpours a slightly hazed amber gold color. Finger high frothy white head. Good lacing. Sweet, fruity malt nose hints at lemon. First sip has bittersweet fruity notes. Slightly cloying, honeyish malt in middle. Dryish wheat malt flavor in finish hints at lemon and banana.

Grapefruit, overripe orange, babyfood nose. Hazy amber, medium yellow head, nice lace. Apricot, banana. Tangerine finish. Full body, easy carbonation, considerably warm. Very hoppy for the style. Full of fruity notes, some native to the style, some not. Complex, but incohesive. Interesting and creative, but a mess in a way.
