Spiced Double Ale with fig paste, orange peels, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves
Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.
2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit III. Thanks Jetson! Pours a clear dark orange appearance with a foamy, brown head. Very spicy, nutmeg, light cinnamon, orange citrusy, clove aroma. Chewy toasty malty, toffee, sprucey, nutmeg, herbal, minty flavor. Super spicy. Kind of an interesting beer.

12 ounce bottle. pours a garnet red color with a medium-sized bubbly beige head. Aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Spicy toasted malt flavor has lot’s of holiday spices, dried fruit and bitter hops. Some burnt caramel and bittersweet chocolate as well. Good balance and flavor.

Sample at Brews Cafe. The beer is a clear dark copper color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily to a film. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma is spicy with notes of malt and pine. Medium body with flavors of cinnamon, malt and dark fruit. The finish is sweetly spiced with a nutmeg and malt aftertaste. Above average all around.

Bottle on Amtrak Train 27 - The Empire Builder ( from Binny’s South Loop) - 06/11/12. Lightly hazed dark amber with a thin tan head that forms a pond and clears to the edge of the glass. Nose comprises Xmas cake, orange peel, spice, toffee, dark fruits, sherry trifle. Tastes of bread, cake mix, dates, clove, cinamon, a little booze. Medium bodied with bite with soft carbonation. Ok as Xmas beers go.
