Spiced Double Ale with fig paste, orange peels, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves
Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.
2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Xmas in July, so very appropriately Xmas beer. Dark Brown, Rather Small Head, Leaves Some Lacing. Clove, Spice Aroma. Tastes sweet, Fig, Raisins. Clove, Caramel, Malt. Reminds me of Goose Island Christmas Ale. Real Nice. Recommended.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Pours dark crimson with medium off-white head. Nice thin small bubble lacing, medium body, and nice cardamom aroma. Taste is big cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, some orange peel, balancing herbal hop background, some dark fruit (hint of fig), and a hint of alcohol. Too much cardamom and I would prefer the alcohol to be completely covered.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/31/2012. Pours lightly hazy ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, fig, orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, floral, brown bread, and herbal earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of malt, fruit, and spice notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, fig, orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, clove, nutmeg, light anise, floral, brown bread, and herbal earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, orange peel, brown sugar, caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, light anise, floral, brown bread, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity of malt, fruit, and spice flavors; with a great sweetness/spice balance; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice spiced Christmas ale! Great balance and complexity of malt, fruit, and spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours deep reddish-brown with a short, yellow-tan head. Aroma is cola, gingerbread, cinnamon. Taste is peppery, spiced bread/cake, nutmeg... Leaves no doubt as to which holiday it represents... Very tasty..though a trifle over the top.

Bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a very small off-white head. Aroma was heavy on the Christmas spices - lots of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg. Flavor had notes of ginger, with cinnamon and nutmeg.

From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a fairly clear cola with an off white head. Aroma of cloves, cinnamon and orange. Hints of toffee and raisin. Warming and slightly bitter finish.

Nice brown coloured body with a ruby glow and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of nice spice, banana bread, allspice, canella and a ton of nutmeg. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spice flavour with allspice, cloves, cinnamon, ginger root and a hint of cardamom with some roasted malt, a bit of yeast and a definite alcohol bite on the finish. Aftertaste shows a nice spicey complexity, but the alcohol and bitterness interrupt with the warmth a bit too much and the spices overpowering. Overall, a nice beer, but not executed flawlessly - so this one should be sampled if found easily, but passed up if there are other options close by. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 12-December-2012 for US$1.59 sampled at home in Upstate New York on 26-December-2012.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with orange highlights and a large foamy orange-brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was sweet plum, sugar and nutmeg. The flavor was tangy plum, cherry, nutmeg, clove, anise, bread and brandy. Medium length finish of plum, nutmeg, bread and brandy. Moderately full bodied. Well done.
