Oak Aged Batch 22 was mainly matured on German Single Malt barrels. This whisky is considerably smoother and less ‘turfed’ than its Scottish counterparts, as a result of which batch 22 is much smoother than the previous batches that were matured on whisky barrels.
In addition to the malty and smoked aroma, banana, vanilla, honey, apple and blossom scent can also be distinguished. The whisky is clearly present but does not dominate, which means that La Trappe Quadrupel can still clearly be recognised. This results in a balanced fusion of flavours, releasing aromas of almond and smoke. Batch 22 is full of flavour and very complex; with every sip, new flavour associations seem to appear. The aftertaste clearly shows the alcohol, together with the bitterness of wood tannin, which lingers for a while. This may not be the most extreme batch, but thanks to its complexity and overall balanced flavour, we can really recommend it.

*rating overgezet van 22-1-2016* Fles gedeeld met Inoven en Benzai. Het is een roodbruin bier met een stevige schuimkraag. Het heeft een fruitige whisky achtige geur. De smaak is vol, warm, houtig en whisky achtig.

375mL bottle drunk 7/7/23. Caramel-raisin-colored. Little head. Rich caramel and raisin with light bourbon. It's well-balanced with spice, lead and some warmth. Maybe a touch of banana, but it's mellow. Sumptuous malts, no alcohol or flaw. In the mouth it's mellow with plentiful raisin, plum, big date and vanilla. The bourbon is really nicely done, I must say. Not in your face, but with a ton of spice, lead, cigar box even. The Quad itself is a lot more mellow than I recall the base beer being. No huge banana-plum. But I suppose that's a product of barrel-aging. Body could use some work; it's rather light, borderline watery, with loose carbonation. There's some light traces of alcohol on the edges. It's rather rough all-around, but charming and lo-fi in another sense. If we could just tighten up that carbonation and get a little more body it would be killer.

375 ml bottle. Pours a bright mahogany with little head. Aromas of oak, raisins, caramel and toasted malts. Flavors are subtle, possibly showing age; dry caramel, oak, and dry malts. Dry alcohol finish. Still quite nice but may not require further cellaring IMHO.

Obviously aged sample No head, dirty amber-brown, still beer. Very fruity nose with raisins, fruitcake, preserved cherries, prunes. Sweet, again fruity, as I prune d'Agen /I. Just a hit at acidity, and more than a boozy hint. Sweet booze, that is. Almondy, marzipan. Alcoholburn and -thinning; still very slick, burning MF. No carbonation left. Middle of the road in the series. But what do we read? German whisky barrels? GERMAN? Where do those hail from?

Well stored bottle. Clear amber/golden body with a small off-white head. Almost without carbonation. Strong aroma, caramel malt and quite boozy. Taste is malty with caramel, oak and dry fruit, but too much alcohol for the balance. Fine body and rather alcoholic aftertaste as well.

Corked bottle. Thanks Benzai! Dark amber color. Vinous aroma, bubblegum, oak, vanilla, dried fruit. Malty sweet flavor with new oak, dried fruit, bubblegum, vanilla and soft vinous notes. Whisky. Nice and complex.

Clear deep red amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, light and semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth malts, a little thin, mild creamy sweetness. Typical La Trappe Oak esters, sweet and a little floral but always contributing and never annoying. Decent sweet wood. Touch of sweet fruity whiskey. Touch of dry berries. Smooth and fairly dry finish. Smooth fruity whiskey linger. As always with these La Trappe Oak Aged, nuanced and layered.
