Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

This year’s Fluxus is brewed with our base malt, malted rye, and malted wheat, then hopped with noble hops before fresh ginger root is added in the whirlpool. Following fermentation, the beer is partially aged in oak gin barrels previously used for Barr Hill Tom Cat Gin. The result is a highly aromatic saison with overtones of ginger and botanicals, a hint of vanilla in the flavor, and a vibrant finish.

Beer #1 of my 10,00th Beer Milestone Celebration! Crisp, but ever so slightly hazy golden and peach coloured body with a thinnish, relatively fast-dying off-white head that doesn't leave any lace at all on the sides, all above a 25 per cent opaque body. Aroma of crisp perfume, light hay, grass, barnyardie funk, a lot of spicey yeast notes and a dash of honey and light caster sugar towards the end - very mild in the nose, but the saison-y aspects still come out. Light to Medium-bodied; Spicey, grassy and herbal yeast notes and especially the yeast strain really come out the in the flavour with a good grassy, perfumey and dry aspect towards the end with a minimal amount of honey sweetness and some very light complexity from the yeast itself, but the dryness is there along with a hint of sugars for balance. Aftertaste is smooth throughout with the yeast and bottle aging really doing this well, perhaps a bit too well for me, given it's 7 years after the bottle, but this is crisp still, showing some good barnyardie and yeast notes, but almost everything else has been muted down very well and made quite easy-to-drink with some light complexity, but pretty easy and smooth considering the style. Overall, a nice beer to start for my 10,000th beer celebration, but probably due to this brewery being one of my favourites (way early on) for my first 10,000 beers, and this store [where I bought it from] also being one of my favourites, but things changing quite a lot during the LONG time it took me to get to 10,000, so this is in honor of all of that, in a good way, this beer was nice and changed a lot during that time (from bottling to drinking) but was still nice to have alongside a big milestone [whatever it is!]. I sampled this 75 cL bottle as Beer #1 [of 21 - 10 (for 10,000) of Each side of the 10,000 Beer Milestone and the 10,000th itself!] of my 10,000th Beer Milestone, purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York (on my last trip to that store ever) on 26-February-2018 for US$16,99, bottled on 16-June-2016 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 23-April-2023.

Remarkably subtle and light for such a big saison, with a modest vanilla-clove sweetness accented by ginger and lemon notes. Grows slightly funky and tart on the finish, with a bright oaked herbaceous vein accenting the lingering yeasty fade. Pours a gorgeous straw gold with a giant white head and infinite lacing. Nose is yeast, oak, and gin. Sparkly texture is good but a tad too carbonated for such a potent farmhouse ale. Tasty.

A hazed golden ale with a thin white head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with light banana esters, cloves, light gin notes, curacao, very nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity banana malt with cloves, light curacao, coriander, light woody notes, alcohol warmth, very nice. Bottle at OttBottShare March 2017.

Keg pour into taster cup at NH Brewfest. Appearance is hazy-to-cloudy, light yellow with greenish tinge, finger-width foamy white head with nice retention and some lacing. Aroma is champagne yeast with gin and ginger. Taste is strong ginger with fruity esters, banana and clove. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with thick texture, average-to-lively carbonation, tangy bitter spiciness, and mix of sweet, yeasty, wine finish. Overall, this is really good. Nice complexity.

Pours gold into a snifter. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving soapy lacing. Ginger, pepper and juniper aromas. Sharp and dry with caramel and hay upfront turning to ginger, warming vanilla and juniper before the lasting pumpernickel finish.
