Gerardus Mercator was a cartographer, philosopher and mathematician, best known for his work in cartography, in particular the world map of 1569 – let’s just say he got around…so did this Flemish Red. From the brewhaus, to the fermenter, to some barrels we had sitting around – this bier was quite an adventure.

Draft at Grove liction. Opaque reddish brown, thick can’t see thru it. Head dies quickly. Aroma is fermented fruits, authentic lightly acetic but not sour cherries, cherry pits, and ends with light acetic vinegar. Flavor is carbonated cherry soda with light acetic and yeasty dough. Lighter mouthfeel and long aftertaste of light apple skins and cherry skins. Just a delight to drink.

Pour is a brown-red with a small white head. Aroma is pretty much all of the oak the beer was stored in. More vinuos than any beer aroma. Flavor is a mild tartness with almost none of the barrel showing. After the first bit of tartness this ends up being really watery. There are tons of other sour ales out there that would probably rate higher than this. This beer needed a better souring agent or more time in the barrel.

Keg at SBWF. Clear dark amber, miniscule head. Tart apply nose. Light bodied with clean mouthfeel. Caramel and red apples, some peppermint. Low bitterness. Confusing, and not really all that pleasant.

Sample at Great Taste of the Midwest on 08/09/2014: Hazy apricot color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart fruit, malt and oak. Medium body with flavors of mildly sour cherry, toasted malt and earthy yeast. The finish is tart with a cherry and oak aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
