Gerardus Mercator was a cartographer, philosopher and mathematician, best known for his work in cartography, in particular the world map of 1569 – let’s just say he got around…so did this Flemish Red. From the brewhaus, to the fermenter, to some barrels we had sitting around – this bier was quite an adventure.

4 oz draft pour at Urban Chestnut Midtown during RBSG 2014. Hazy amber with off-white head. Aromas of funk, cheese, tart notes. Tastes of bread, garlic, sweet fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Not good and not what I was expecting for a flanders.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a hazy amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a harsh sour red fruit note with some earthy grains underlying. Flavor has a bit of sour reed fruits with an earthy grain and must backing.
