Smoked India Black Ale.

What is with the paradoxical term 'Black IPA' anyway? Whatever it is, we do love black beers.. also smoked beers, and of course everyone loves hops these daze.. A complex blend various smoked, caramel and subdued roasted malts lay the base for a combination of piney, dank and (dark) fruity hops.. While there is a lot to contemplate with this beast, just be sure to enjoy it without getting too sucked into its enigmatic composition.

Label Design Notes: The layout of the label reinforces the absurdity by recalling both early promotional materials from Braun and Alfred Stieglitz's photo of Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain".

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Nr Gent, Belgie, consumed at home Saturday 2nd April 2016 . Shark eye black on the pour with an off-white head, actually might have a hint of light beige about it. Some smokey dark fruits in tandem on the nose. Soft in the mouth, lots of juicy fresh green hops, creamy but with a nice milky chocolate lick. A little bit boozy on the finish. Very nice beer. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0

Bottle. A- Smoke, pine, bitter, roasty. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Subtle smoke, pine, bitter, subtle citrus. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish. O- I assumed being a smoked it would be more of a porter. Nope. This was a smokey IPA. Not what I wanted but better than I thought it would be. Personally, I’d call this a Black IPA as the smoke was there but pretty minimal. Okay.

Bottle. (thanks Wolff) Dark brown with a small head. Aroma and taste of caramel, dried fruit, apricot, light wood and some hints of hops. The body was medium as was the bitterness. An ok one.

12 oz. purchased at Julio’s Liquors for a price of $4.49 before the discount. Deep brown, borderline black color. Noticeable yeast floating around in the liquid. Aroma starts with dark chocolate, just a touch of smoke and a solid amount of pine.

Well, thankfully the smoke is very subtle. It fact it is kind of hard to find it at all. Sweet roasted grain upfront with dark chocolate hints. The finish is bold pine hops with a mild citrus tone. Pine resin lingers after the sip. Dry texture. I don’t doubt smoked malt was used but this bad boy is a black IPA in flavor. I enjoyed this.

Bottle: Pours almost black, with red highlights and a tall, dark tan head. Sweet fruity wood smoke, dark fruit aroma. Taste is leafy and tea-like hops, light smoky chocolate malt. Not bad.....though more like a mild BIPA with tea and sweet dark fruit instead of citrus-peel and coffee....A little different....enjoyable.

Bottle. Pour is a dark brown with a thin head and tons of gunk bobbing around in the carbonation. Flavor is harshly tanin with a bitter edge to it. A bit of peat/charcoal. Meh. Kind of like sucking on a scorched tea bag.
