Smoked India Black Ale.
What is with the paradoxical term 'Black IPA' anyway? Whatever it is, we do love black beers.. also smoked beers, and of course everyone loves hops these daze.. A complex blend various smoked, caramel and subdued roasted malts lay the base for a combination of piney, dank and (dark) fruity hops.. While there is a lot to contemplate with this beast, just be sure to enjoy it without getting too sucked into its enigmatic composition.
Label Design Notes: The layout of the label reinforces the absurdity by recalling both early promotional materials from Braun and Alfred Stieglitz's photo of Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain".

Bottle. Dark brown beer with a dark tan head. Grapefruit and caramel aroma with light smoke. Smoke and grapefruit flavor with pine. Medium body. Good bitterness. Smoke and pine linger with grapefruit and light cocoa.

Draft. Deep maroon brown color, tan head. Aroma is earthy toast. Taste is bready, earthy, very subtle burnt embers. Tasty.

This is much more of a Black IPA than a "Smoked" beer, whatever that really constitutes. Deep opaque black-brown body. Steady glass rimming beige head. Thick, heavy, oily, caramel, black chocolate, roast..classic Black IPA traits...maybe a pinch more malt depth with the smoked tones. Overall a pretty solid offering.

The Sampler, Brooklyn bottle: pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is herbal, roasted malts, pine, and thats about it. Taste is bitter and roasty. Clearly very much a dark beer. Lingering aftertaste that i still taste twenty minutes after finishing it. Not bad but it is not really my thing.

Pour is a black with a large tan head. Aroma is chocolate malt with some clove or licorice and maybe even some alcohol. Flavor is more of a earthy peat and treacle. Finish is more of a roasted and char malt. Not much smoke or hops. It’s a well made beer but nothing is really floating my boat.

Bottle sample @ Leuven Beer Innovation 2015, shared with the RB Belgian crew. Brune, col beige. Arôme au bouquet malté, pâle, note de poudre de cacao, le tout ponctué par un bel effet des houblons tirant vers les agrumes, et résineux. Palais est malté, grillé, houblonné vert, herbacé et résineux, pointe cendre-fumé sur la fin mais restant discrète. Le tout garde une petite touche chocolatée sur la fin et en belle balance avec les houblons.

Surprise act at Leuven Innovation Beer Festival as this wasn’t listed in advance. Black beer with moussy, stable, cream white head; pleasant and complex aroma of liquorice, tobacco, charcoal, dried plums, grapefruit touch; dry, tangy flavour, dried fruits, fairly strong carbo for the style, smoked accent, gentle roasted bitterness, long peppery and citrussy hop bitter finish.

Due to artificial coloured illumination, appearance not estimable, arbitrary 4/5 Ureum-rich hops, nose suggesting stickiness. Dry, hoppy, dusty; knäckebrød with some bitter spread. Well-bodied, slick. Sample not 100%

Thanks for sharing! Sampled @ Leuven Innovation Beer Festival. Black little mocha bubbles. Nose soy, cold coffee & chocolate. Taste is herbal upfront, bark, odd, syrup chocolate, cheap chocolate, soy, cheap bit thin syrup, cheap sugar,… Syrupy body, bit too much soy. Nice but not very attenuated or stellar nor very smokey safe for maybe the soy sauce note.

Sehr dunkel braun, geringe beiger Schaum. Geruch sehr Schokoladig, süß, Karamell. Geschmack trocken röstmalzig, Kaffee, schokoladig, Vanille, bitter.
