A decidedly American imperial stout with espresso

The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. For each 120-barrel batch, we incorporated over 250 lbs. of artisanal espresso-roast beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence. When it came time to selecting our coffee, we chose the same local roasters who contributed to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic beans helped us achieve this dark, hoppy and wonderfully aromatic espresso stout.

In 2013, as part of our “Odd Beers for Odd Years” program, we brewed our 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. We loved this beer so much that we wanted another way to brew something similar to it. This beer is first in a series of higher ABV seasonals that we will be brewing in 2016. We used Stone ESPRESSO IRS as an inspiration but took it in a slightly different direction. Ultimately, I was inspired by craft brewed stouts of the late 1980s and early ‘90s. To me, that meant using 100 percent American hops and American specialty malts. This a stout similar to one I would have brewed when I was first starting out as a brewer, so it was fun to take sort of a “throwback” approach. Espresso of course adds a wonderful complement to the coffee and cocoa flavors that are coming from the malts.

bottle - Pours near black with a small, lingering tan head. The aroma is of dark roast malt and coffee. The robust flavor is more of that along with some resin and chocolate notes. Smooth. Full bodied. Dangerously easy to drink. Well done.

Bottle from Geers. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Nose of espresso, mocha, roased malts. Dry, bitter and coffee-forward. Maltiness overrules the hoppines. Very nice.

27.04.2017, 12 oz bottle @ home:
Big light brown fizzy-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry roasted, espresso, minerals, roasted grain, grass, dark malts, alcohol, chocolate, caramel, lactose, hops. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish roasted, weeds, sour-ish roasted grain, sour coffee, bark, hops, pine needles, grass, dark malts, dark sugar, minerals, alcohol. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly harsh roasted mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Pitch black colored, medium- tan frothy head, not that lasting. Aroma is of strong coffee, coffee beans, roasted malt, some floral hops underneath. Taste is medium to very sweet malt, milk chocolate, bit caramel, chocolate cake, roasted malt and strong coffee and coffee beans, medium bitterness, dry coffee finish, bit alcohol. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, oily. Superb! (bottle, Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte)

More my speed. Rare for coffee to hold up this well in a year-old bottle, but Americano Stout ages like a champ. Lovely pour, a deep dark brown with a healthy beige head, and the nose oozes with gooey mocha sweetness. Taste starts with a heavy dose of roasted chocolate, then develops a mild fig middle before sliding into a massive espresso back end. Stays moderately sweet, but the mocha fade keeps it from growing cloy. Nice beer. Wasn’t expecting it to mature so nicely.

Bottle from Pivny raj. Lots of intense coffee in both aroma and flavour. Only light dregs though, mostly clean fruity coffee. Lots of roastiness too. Enough sweetness/body to let you know that this is a big beer, coupled by the medium-light alcohol warmth. Good one, strong, intense.

Complete black color with a fine beige head. Good lacing. Nice intensity in the aroma. Medium + body and a smooth carbonation level. Good balance between sweetness and bitterness. Espresso, chocolate, coffee and mild roast in the flavor. Nice and tasty stuff with a fine complexity.
