Named after a radical skiing and snowboarding maneuver, Alaskan Brewing Company’s newest Spring Seasonal Release, Hop Turn IPA offers a change in direction from the recent trends in West Coast IPAs. Meant as an alternative to the hop bitterness wars that have defined much of the current development in IPAs, Hop Turn seeks a more delicate taste experience influenced by legendary old-world beers.

Pours a cloudy, light golden-yellow, with minimal head. Aroma is very grassy. Flavor also quite grassy. This one didn’t really taste very IPA-like.

On tap at Red Cow North Loop. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of grass and pine with a sweet grain backbone. Flavor has a bit of sweet citrus but is still mainly grass and pine with a grain backbone.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 5/28/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey/nutty, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey/nutty, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, grapefruit, melon, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very unique IPA with all German malts/hops; but it works very well. A very enjoyable offering.

Tap at Cap Beer Fest 2016. Pours translucent gold with a white head. Aroma is mixed fruit and mildly roasty malt. Flavor is same, perhaps with some floral. It’s quite pleasant and decently bitter. Enough hop to satisfy.
