Named after a radical skiing and snowboarding maneuver, Alaskan Brewing Company’s newest Spring Seasonal Release, Hop Turn IPA offers a change in direction from the recent trends in West Coast IPAs. Meant as an alternative to the hop bitterness wars that have defined much of the current development in IPAs, Hop Turn seeks a more delicate taste experience influenced by legendary old-world beers.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange-tan body. Thin, foamy head. Delicate and clean, like a good UK bitter, but this is 7.5%, so it almost has some Imperial Pils like characteristics. Super clean golden malt backdrop. Mellow, delicate piney hop tones. Solid offering, delicious.

Pour is a hazy orange with a large white head. Aroma is a nice almost tangerine citrus with no malt presence. Flavor is again a predominant citrus with a slight malt backbone and lots of carbonation. Decent but mild hop presence with no sweet malt to get in the way of enjoying the beer. Also it dose not drink like a 7.5% so be careful.

12 oz bottle from a six pack bought at the supermarket. Aroma is sour berry jam, latex, Pixie Stix, candy sweet malt, earthy. Pours hazy golden with a thick off-white head with great retention and some lace. Taste is medium-level bitter backed by a candy sweetness with some citrus and herbal notes in flavor. Nice creamy mouthfeel, medium-bodied. Just a really nice, well-rounded IPA. Should be year round.

It’s back in 12 ounce 6 packs. Best by April 15th 2016.
Pours a clear gold with a 2 finger head of foam.
The smell has piney and grassy hops with a hint of lemon zest. Malt bill is mild to the nose; a bit of bread and caramel.
Though certainly hop forward in the taste, I find more of a balance than what the smell suggested. Grassy, notable pine, again. .hints of lemon zest.
Malt brings some bready notes and a wee bit of caramel sweetness.
Smooth lightish body makes it an easy drinker.
This is a very welcome addition to my IPA rotation.

I had several samples of this at the brewery.
Into a sample glass, the appearance was a nice looking slightly hazy golden yellow with a nice transparency rolling about it. Soft carbonation was seen rising at a moderate pace. For a sample glass, a thin finger of white foaminess lasted about a good thirty seconds before dieing off.
The smell started off with a light bitter citrus that ends up leading more towards a nice lemon flavoring.
The taste was dry and bitter through the lemon / citrus notes.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body. Surprisingly enough, the ABV hides itself extremely well, it does have a fairly decent sessionable quality about it. The carbonation was there and was good for the style and for me.
Overall, this was an extremely dry AIPA. Not bad, but now I am gulping a whole lot of water, it’s just really dry - reminiscent of Elysian’s Dayglow but not as flavoful.
