Imperial stout with black treacle and toasted barrel staves.

Brewed in collaboration with Dead End Brew Machine, we put together a recipe for a deep rich imperial stout, layered with dark, roast and crystal malts, along with a 100kg of Tate and Lyle black treacle. The treacle adds a rich bittersweet flavour with notes of liquorice and caramel. We conditioned the beer on staves from a PX cask, which we chopped up and toasted in our smoker. The result is a powerful stout with notes of treacle, plums, burnt caramel, barrel oak and a whisper of smoke.

Can thanks to my bro. It pours spiky jet black with a small, deep head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, charred vibes, umami, salty liquorice, treacle, molasses, toothy, chewy, cacao nibs and some fruit cake. The taste is slick, oily, rich, decadent, charred malt, umami, liquorice, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, warming booze, some bitterness, leather, tannin, burnt toast, malt loaf, peppery spice and charred oak with a dark roasted and dry finish. Full body and moderate carbonation. A rich umami stout. Robust and savoury.

Can via the online shop. Slick pour sits black. Thick plump tan swede. Leggy and lacing too. Nose has liquorice root. Tangy malts. Herby woody notes. Bitter dark chocolate. Taste is extremely sweet to start with a tangy bitterness. Slick and slightly heavy on the palate. Sweetness is thankfully balanced out on the finish with the tangy bitterness. Decent sipper but overall it’s disjointed. Heavy but twangy. Looks boss, mind.

Can from Great Grog. Black body with a thick tan head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of dumpling, smoked wood and vanilla. Flavour of roasted malt and Marmite with a smoky finish. Medium to full body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. This drinks easily for the ABV. It’s smoky and sweet. It’s good but I hoped for more given the price and the quality of both breweries involved.
