Inspired by the Trappist Dubbel style, Rubbel is an ode to a Belgian classic with a contemporary, rum-barrel aged twist. Our version of the dubbel pours amber-brown in color and emits aromatic qualities of toffee, sweet-candi sugar, toasted bread, raisins, mild molasses, and faint oak. Medium in body with a pleasantly dry mouthfeel, Rubbel drinks with a restrained malt sweetness and complementing flavors of caramel, dark fruit, molasses and underlying, yeast-derived spice.

Bottle shared on NJ Transit - big thanks to Sander for this rare Trill gear. Pours clear amber with a creamy, khaki head. The nose holds toasted caramel, bread, brown sugar, light toffee, suggestions of oxidation. Medium to heavy sweet flavour, with more creamy toffee, raisins and prunes, berries, caramel. Medium to full bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Sweet finish, moderately dry, with more berries, toffee and raisins. Fun stuff.

750ml bottle pours a hazy amber with some bright, white head. Nose has lots of malt and honey comb, some spice and yeast. Smells like a dubbel. Flavor... well... where’s the rum? All malt and honey comb, candy. Full, oily finish.

The beer is a deep amber. It’s fairly hazy. Creamy off white head. Good retention. The aroma is candy-ish malt sugar, caramel, light floral rum, bread, dough and very mild oak. Raisins, apricots, a little plum. Raisin and dough malt sweetness. Mild barrel character which is probably a good thing. A bit sweet but nice. Subtle earthy Belgian yeast note bouncing around. Full mouthfeel. Solid enough dubbel. Doesnt overdo the barrel flavor.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma is rather fruity with a lot of raisin, fig, plum and prune. Some light banana and bubblegum. Light rum and oak notes. Moderate caramel and toasted bread notes with lighter toffee. More rum as it warms. Pours a fairly clear, amber brown with some copper notes. Moderately large, light tan head with decent retention as it recedes to the edges. Flavor is moderately sweet, but less so than the aroma would lead me to believe it would be. Moderate toasted bread with lighter caramel and toffee. Light nuttiness. Low fruit esters, light raisin and plum. Low rum and oak notes. Medium light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a better beer than expected with a good balance of all it’s different characteristics. Nothing dominates and the rum barrel has a really light presence.
