Draft sample @ Haand fest ’16, Drammen. Shared with the Norwegian tasting crew.

Bottle from Malt Attacks. Danish Brett IPA, with violent gushing upon opening the bottle, fortunately I did not trust this beer too much and opened it above the sink. Thickly cobweb-lacing, eggshell white, coarse, thick head over a lightly hazy, deep orange blonde beer with vivid fizz. Aroma indeed combines the typical Brett effects - having had the time to develop since this is a somewhat older bottle - with hop effects, the result being more or less reminiscent of Orval’s basic profile; I get impressions of damp hay, wet leather, lemon peel, rosewater, medlar, blood orange, lavender, white pepper, banana, peach, Riesling, dried mushrooms, forest floor, fermenting pear, some undisturbing ureum. Crisp, estery onset, lots of overripe gooseberry, unripe pear, raw pineapple and green plum, sweetish and sourish with strong, minerally, bit souring carbonation; pleasantly caramelly and bready malt body, providing background sweetishness against an array of leathery, ’horseblanket’, musty Brett flavours; finishes dry, with malt juiciness as a basic structure for funky ’Brettiness’ as well as deep, leafy, herbal, peppery hop bitterness lasting for quite some time. Too bad for the gushing, the Brett kept fermenting in this bottle for too long perhaps, but the overall flavour is intriguing, reminding me a bit of Orval the way it was years ago when it was hoppier than now, but with a somewhat thinner body, more overall sweetishness and a bit less elegance. I’m still having trouble with the concept of ’Brett IPA’ in terms of cellaring times, but many of them prove to be very good beers, regardless of age... Enjoyed this a lot, but points off for the gushing.

Flaske 330ml. Gave fra Lars. Delt med Rune på Nerstranda 24 Okt 15. Gyldenbrun. Ekstremt høyt skum som holder seg lenge. Kremtopp! Spotlacing. God fruktaroma. Fersken. Smaken svakt syrlig med en god tørr fruktsmak. Behagelig og spesiell. Sedimenter igjen. Uklar siste kvelling.

330ml bottle, trade with Skinnyviking, drinking before noon with Finn. Huge, rocky white head slowly diminishing over a hazy golden body. Fair lacing. Fresh citrus taste sustained by basement and brett. Peach and mandarin flavours alongside brett and fruity tartness to the ending, very well balanced. Fine bodied. Refreshing and pleasing (Tromsø 24.10.2015).

Poured from a bottle with a June, 2018 best by date. Aroma is slightly malty with some caramel and toasted bread. Lots of Brett character, but not great. Over ripe, almost rotting stone fruit, tropical fruit and pineapple with a bit of a citrus note. Medium light phenolics that start to approach phenolics. Pours a hazy, copper orange with a medium sized, medium thick, white head that slowly recedes to the edges and leaving a thin film on the center. Medium lacing and smallish legs. Flavor is lightly sweet with some medium light toasted bread and cracker notes with a hint of caramel. Moderately strong bitterness. Some grassy, herbal, woody hop notes with a hit of citrus. Brett character is everything that could go wrong with Brett. Overpowering phenolics with a lot of over ripe, rotting fruit which exacerbates the harsh bitterness. Stone fruit, tropical fruit and lighter citrus but it doesn’t work. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, not a good Brett IPA; in fact, this may be an example of everything that can go wrong when playing with Brett. Fruit is off and phenolics are off. Bitterness is very harsh.
