Imperial stout inspired by Mexican hot chocolate

Collaborators: Chris Banker, Winner, Stone Homebrew Competition / Iván Morales, Brewmaster, Cervecería Insurgente / Mitch Steele, Brewmaster, Stone Brewing Co.

This is a beloved stout. When first introduced as a limited special collaboration release with San Diego homebrewer Chris Banker (after his recipe won our annual homebrew competition) and Cerveceria Insurgente, it was an instant hit and fans began clamoring for its return. Seeing as how its amazing flavor profile is evocative of Mexican hot chocolate, featuring coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and a generous amount of chocolate, we concluded it was the perfect stout to re-release in celebration of the Holidays and the entire winter season. This is now a highly anticipated yearly tradition that we are pleased to present from us to you, and makes a perfect wintry gift from you to your friends, loved ones, or simply to yourself. Cheers!

When we first brewed this beer in 2014, everyone on the brewing team was blown away by its multiple layers of flavor. The inspiration came from Mexican hot chocolate combined with coffee. We loved how wonderfully this beer showcases the spices, cocoa and subtle coffee roast flavors, so much that Stone is excited to bring it back as an annual special release.

Pours dark brown, almost black with soft light brown head. Chocolate and some caramel in aroma, but richer in flavour, that ads some malty sweatness, vanilla, stone fruit, and bitterness. Medium to full body, with good malty and bitter (almost too bitter) aftertaste. Was great with mature cheese.

A nicely blended and executed IS. The nose features dark chocolate, roasted coffee and a touch of spice. The taste expands on those spices, with cinnamon and nutmeg holding their own with dark chocolate, roasted coffee and roasted caramel malt. A nice cream element keeps it smooth. A solid IS density and a rich semi-slick mouth feel add to a nice quaff.

Can at Csaka. Pours black with beige head. Nose is lactosey-vanilla sweetness, malts and some chocolate notes. In taste it’s coffee, earthy notes, chocolate, a faint spicy touch and a warming, boozy hint. Closes with long sweetish finish, has medium body and average carbo. Pleasant, and if it was heavier and more creamy on body it would be even better.

Dark brown, small, beige head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate, light vanilla. In taste coffee, thin chocolate, roastiness and powdery cocoa. Full body, moderate carbonation. Sour notes enhance drinkability. Spice additions are delicate, giving a bit of warming on the finish. Alcohol well hidden.

Right off the bat a thick wave of cocoa, and freshly ground coffee beans with alot of nutmeg, and cinnamon. Silky mouth feel, soft carb. Low bitterness, satisfying spicy finish. A lovely spicy chocolate pie flavour in the end. Complex and surprisingly very drinkable. Really nice.
