Imperial stout inspired by Mexican hot chocolate
Collaborators: Chris Banker, Winner, Stone Homebrew Competition / Iván Morales, Brewmaster, Cervecería Insurgente / Mitch Steele, Brewmaster, Stone Brewing Co.
This is a beloved stout. When first introduced as a limited special collaboration release with San Diego homebrewer Chris Banker (after his recipe won our annual homebrew competition) and Cerveceria Insurgente, it was an instant hit and fans began clamoring for its return. Seeing as how its amazing flavor profile is evocative of Mexican hot chocolate, featuring coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and a generous amount of chocolate, we concluded it was the perfect stout to re-release in celebration of the Holidays and the entire winter season. This is now a highly anticipated yearly tradition that we are pleased to present from us to you, and makes a perfect wintry gift from you to your friends, loved ones, or simply to yourself. Cheers!
When we first brewed this beer in 2014, everyone on the brewing team was blown away by its multiple layers of flavor. The inspiration came from Mexican hot chocolate combined with coffee. We loved how wonderfully this beer showcases the spices, cocoa and subtle coffee roast flavors, so much that Stone is excited to bring it back as an annual special release.

330ml can from the Beer Bank, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a mostly lasting frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, liqourice, cinnamon, marzipan, lavender. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a rich, roasty, liqourice, light chocolate, floral aromatic hop palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation and a slightly oily mouthfeel. Not your average imperial stout!

Can from Lumiere. Black color, dark brown head. Funny smell of perfume, spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, candies. Flavor of toasted malts, oats/rye/lactose, black chocolate, chili, cinnamon, clove, pepper. A citrusy/piney note on the hops side, grass. Taste is bold, juicy, creamy with a solid bitter balance. Texture is thick, heavy. Finish spiced, peppery, sticky. Not an easy one, strong.

On tap at Rush Creek Lodge near Yosemite. Pours black with brown highlights and a brown head. Cocoa and cinnamon predominate the flavor, with slight head from the chili in the background. Flavor is well balanced with a bit more of the chili showing. Slight dusting of the pepper and cinnamon. Really nice and well balanced all around.

Can. Pitch black, medium sizedbeige head, creamy and pretty lasting. Milder chocolate nose, some spices, mostly cinnamon, slight nutmeg, a bit of roastiness. Milder sweetness, quite some spicess in teh finish, nutmeg comes through. Slightly spicy inthe finish and lasting aftertaste. Fuller body, silky. Too much nutmet, but not bad.

Great imp stout with perfect blend of adjuncts make this special, taking the beer unmistakably in the Mexican hot chocolate direction without losing its soul to sugary sweetness.

Can, 0.355l. Murky deep brown, almost black pour. One finger frothy brown head, short lasting. Medium lacing on the glass. Sweet and spicy nose, strong cinnamon notes, nutty, somewhat fruity background. Medium body, soft carbonation, refreshingly fizzy. Chewy texture with slight creaminess to it. Nice mouthfeel overall, perhaps a bit lighter than expected. Roasty bittersweet taste with a spicy kick. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon. Vanilla, molasses. Nutty, earthy notes. Spicy peppers. Lingering roasty bitterness that slowly builds up. Sticky. Medium lasting finish, dry, bitter and spicy. Interesting beer to try.
