We’ve rounded up some great malts and hops for Hoppy Ki Yay IPA, our year round IPA. This straw coloured ale is hopped with Columbus and Amarillo and rounded out by a mild body from the malts.

Keg at the East Street Tap, Brighton. Amber pour with a white head. Malt, vanilla, toffee, caramel and sweet citrus in the nose. Flavours of sweet malt, more vanilla, caramel. Light hoppy bite in the finish. Good.

Keg at BrewDog Leicester. Very hazy olive green/brown. Odd fruity and medicinal aroma: greengage, gooseberry and papaya rise above a base astringency. There’s a heaviness from the sweet malts too. The taste is more complex with a malty sweetness cut by the bittering hop. Short medicinal finish. Good but a mixed bag.

Can. Hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Airy palate, semi dry, good fine crispness. Very light malts bring a pleasant light sweetness. Mild hop skunk leads to lots of cooling pine. Sweet tropical fruits, a little mango and pineapple identifiable. Trace of sherbet. Cooling pine finish brings modest hop spice. Spicy linger. Comes together very well indeed. Lovely light but very hoppy IPA.

Can, Total Wine, West Richmond. Pours golden with an amber tint, large, soft off-white to yellowish head. Aroma of floral hops, pine, wood. Flavor is very piney - spruce tips perhaps, follows with grapefruit peel and a bit of mango juice and pepper. Pretty good.

Can: Tangerine and mango nose, honey underneath, not strong. Cloudy amber, medium yellow head, good lacing, wisps of fine sediment. Honeycomb, orange peel, lillies. Medium body, easy carbonation, resinous. Full flavored, bitterness is a bit too harsh and biting
