Volume 19: Mosaic Single Hopped Rye Ale. Brewer “Spike” has an affinity towards rye malt, so this comes a no surprise.
Freshly harvested from Hop Breeding Company, LLC in Yakima Valley, the hops used in Side Project 19 “Mosaic” came freshly picked from the fields of Perrault Farms, to our brewery, and into your glass. Known as hop HBC 369 before official naming in 2011, Mosaic is the daughter of Simcoe (YCR 14) and a Nugget-derived male. To get the best of all worlds from this new Humulus lupus, we used 100% Mosaic throughout the brewing process to utilize all the flavor and aroma that this world-class hop has to offer.

Bomber from Beer Run. Pours a slightly hazy red color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of floral and tropical hops with mild caramel and rye notes. The taste is earthy, tropical, citrus hops and mild caramel malts. Rye finish. Medium bodied.

Aroma: The nose of this one is fairly hoppy, some citrus, pine/resin, spice, and some rye bread
Appearance: Pours a dark reddish/mahogany color with a small beige head and some spotty lace
Flavor: The rye certainly comes out more in the flavor, as the taste starts quite bready/malty, and then hops show up mid-palate and carry through to a finish that has more of a resiny bitterness
Palate: Medium bodied, has a bit of stickiness early, average carb, and a long, clean, dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty interesting beer. It has a really very solid nose that is reminiscent of a many hoppy Reds. The taste is a bit different, as the rye really comes out, and I also detected what I believe to be some small flaws, but overall the flavor works pretty well. It also has a nice look and feel to it. I enjoyed what they did here.

Pours clear copper color with off white head. Aromas of rye and pine. Toasted malt, spicy rye and pine flavors. Medium body with average carbonation.

Pour is medium to dark brown with some red highlights. The aroma is citrus hops and some spice I suppose from the rye malt. The flavor is bitter which builds in intensity on the tongue. Some dryness in the finish. Some earthy woody notes to this as well.

22 oz. bottle. Dark brown and red, with a small, bubbly, off-white head. The aroma is very nice floral and earthy hops, with some black bread, cola and roasted malts. The flavor is sweet and spicy, with mild bitterness through the finish. The palate is acidic, and kinda watery. Overall, this beer has a great aroma, with very forward aromatic hops, but a flavor that more closely resembles are brown ale or ESB. The palate is a little weak, but overall, this is a delicious, unique, and complex beer.
