This is a beer brewed in Amsterdam by our American friends from Marz Brewing, Chicago, and named after the neighbourhood where their own brewery is based. Unsurprisingly, there is a heavy American influence here, which means lots of hops, American hops. Nonetheless, their bitterness is beautifully balanced with the equally significant amount of malt a barley wine naturally requires. There is plenty of roasted and caramalt in the rich malt base of this deep, dark, glowing beauty. This American barley wine has a full, soft, rich but very balanced taste. To top it all off, there is a rich, full, creamy layer of foam.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, chestnut colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish, sugary, caramel malty aroma with a toasty touch, notes of dark caramel, hints of malt lozenge, a touch of roasted nuts. Taste is sweet caramel malty, slightly fruity hoppy, notes of dark caramel, hints of dried fruit, raisin, a touch of plum and apricot, a bitter touch of burnt caramel and roasted nuts; minimally warming, alcoholic finish. Oily texture, soft and minimally sticky palate. Nice.

7 3 7 3 15 Bottle shared. Hazy brown with a small off white head. Aroma of toffee, butterscotch, caramel, malt and light overripe fruits. Flavour is heavy sweet and above moderate bitter. Above medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle 330ml. @ home. [ As ’t IJ / Marz Community Bridgeport Barley Wine ].[ Courtesy of my Local Swap 2015-3 MonsterMagnet ]. Clear medium to dark amber - red brown color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, sweet malt, moderate hoppy, citrus - fruity, dried fruit, wood, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, sweet malt, candy, dried fruit, hoppy, alcohol, wood. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to lively, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20151224]

0.33 l bottle from De Bierkoning, bottled in early 2015 I think (badly printed label). Clear, dark red with a medium large, creamy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-malty aroma of raisins, prunes, molasses, pine resin and candied cherries. Sweet, fruity-malty taste of raisins, candied cherries, dates and molasses, followed by a long, medium bitter and warming finish. Full body, very thick and sticky mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Super-sweet stuff, but balanced by a long and bitter finish. No alcohol detectable, very tasty, excellent mouthfeel. Very good!
