Tap. Bundobust, Leeds. Clear, dark chestnut brown. Film of greyish head. Black treacle. Chestnut honey. Spicy malts. A fairly acrid bitter note on top of that. Taste is punchy, pithy bitter. Some sickly sweetness. Bitter finish. A bit all over the shop.

Keg at the Rake, 14/02/15, thanks to that guy below for the CDA tip off. Mahogany brown with a moderate light tan covering. Nose is spice, pine, light tropicana, earthy, red berry pangs. Taste comprises earthy hop, liquorice stick, light roast, pine needle, red grapefruit, red berry, perfumed tones. Medium body, prickly carbonation - overcooked here, semi drying close. Ok CDA, carbonation level drops this a couple of points.

Keg at the Rake. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The nose is rich roast, earthy, coffee, light honey sweetness, dull pine and ash The taste is bitter, rich roasts, charred wood, resin, ash, earth, tar, mild sweetness and coffee with lots of lingering bitterness on the finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Punchy bitterness and not a whole lot of honey. Solid stuff though.

This is a strange one but I think it works somewhere in the uncertain realm of black ipas. Honey hops and roast are all pretty evident here. Black pour with foamy mocha head and lacing. Medium bitter finish. Some viscosity in texture from honey. Nicely blended. Sample this on tap at whole foods by Churchkey.

Location: Draft at World of Beer-Baltimore, 11/2/14

Aroma: The aroma is roasted malts, with some sweeter notes, and a bit of hop as well
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a good amount of tan head
Flavor: The taste is similar, with the light sweetness and a light-mid bitterness in good balance
Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, fairly smooth, with a lightly dry finish on the mouth
Overall Impression: I thought this one was solid, but not great. Has the roast/hop balance you are looking for in the style, but nothing really stood out to make it a great beer.
