The brewers at Ca L’Arenys have come up with a fantastico new offering, NO SUCKS. Before everyone racks their brain trying to uncover the hidden meaning here, we’ll let the Guineu fox out of the bag and tell you it’s a subtle Catalonian play on the words “no Saccharomyces” - indicating, of course, a wild yeast beer made instead with Kluyveromyces! Per the great tradition at Ca L’Arenys, this is a low abv (3.3%) ale that’s packed with flavor & character-just the kind of beer we love to drink in moderate excess.
We sampled this magnífica brew for the first time at the X Mostra de Cervesa de MEDIONA, held each June in the Catalan mountain town of the same name. The “Mediona Festival” is perhaps our favorite small beer event in the world, and we very highly recommend you get there. You might pop into nearby Barcelona while you’re at it.

Draught at Deep Ellum circa 2010.
Light hazy blonde beer with a sizeable head.
Peppery with not really a recognizable yeast signature (nothing like B. brux, for example). Bready malts with light fruitiness and some hop acidity.
Similar flavors. Maybe more novel than actually interesting. Don't think this yeast is all that expressive. Pepper and muted yellow fruits with big carbonation and moderately bready malts.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber brown with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has some sweet grains with a bit of light tart fruits and a touch of earthiness. Flavor has earthy grain and a combination of sweet and lightly tart fruits.

Dark brown Amber color. It has an odd woody and pear character but not very sour. Light body and over all not too exciting, but not bad.

Beer Store, Southampton PA: Pours with a massive head that is off-white and a body of bronze. Aroma is funky and lightly malty. Taste is slightly sour and funky. Little malty touch. It doesn’t feel that this is that low ABV, but I guess it is. This is interesting, but not the best thing out there.

Draft. Cloudy brown color, scant tan head. Aroma of rotten dusty strawberries. Taste is watery, dusty, peppery fruit. Strange.

On tap at The Partisan DC. Pours a watery amber with some fast fading head. Nose has a lot of grapefruit rind, soap, fake strawberry candies, plenty of brett. Flavor is the same, quite tart, grapefruit rind, unripened strawberry, vitamin C tablets. Sour finish, tons of carbonation.

Bottle. Coppery colour with an off-white and large head with good duration. Aroma is light toasty with sourish notes. Flavor has notes of herbs, light floral and honey hints, with a sour sensation on the mouth. The final is crispy and sourish, vey high carbonation.
