This Christmas, why not offer a delicious New Hampshire-brewed gift that does both? Smuttynose Smistletoe is back to fill that void. The beer itself is a festive take on Bière de Garde, a more robust variant of the farmhouse ale family tree; brewed with sweet cherries, black currants and plums then aged on lightly toasted American oak.

Very nice beer. Pours cloudy orange with ok head and lacing. Very nicely done, with great balance. Some raisins, citrus, a touch of oak that’s well integrated. Only a hint of cherry and black currant. Light sweet finish. Thanks to Travlr for sharing this bottle at Churchkey.

Bottle at Churchkey courtesy of craftycarl21, thanks! Slightly hazy teddish amber color, off white head. Aroma of brandied stone fruit, vanilla, light tannins. Taste is sweetish and lightly spiced fruity berries, raisins. Very nuce. I’d like to cellar a few of these.

750 cork and cage from The Lazy Dog. Pours a slightly hazy deep auburn color with a good sized long lasting frothy bubbly white head. The aroma is a mix of funk and fruit. Yeasty earthy esters mingle with tart cherry, plum and light oak. The flavor is sweet with hints of earth and spice. Tart fruit, I assume currant, puckers a little while the stone fruits provide a nice sweet counter to the earthy yeasty character of the base beer. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation. Different take on a Biere de Garde, but I really enjoyed it.
