THE ALE: This Bière de Garde is brewed in the style of a traditional, rustic artisanal French farmhouse ale. Its complex malt-driven flavor elicits notes of toasted caramel, roasted malts and cocoa, complimented by a mild sweetness. It pairs best with rich foods like steak and barbecue.
THE STORY: Named to commemorate a night in Kenya, when his house was shaking so strongly Del thought it was an earthquake. He shot out of bed and ran outside to see what was happening. It turned out to be a massive hippo from nearby Lake Naivasha, scratching itself against the house. Don’t worry – this ale is much more subtle.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of bu11zeye. Pours a cloudy amber with an off-white head. Sweet toffeeish aroma with a little dusty hops. Medium body, excessive casrbonation. Sweet overripe fruit and some caramel, a little ashy and dusty. Some perfumy hops leading to a dry finish. 270812

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a small frothy off white head. The aroma is a bready malt and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with a bitter hop and dry malt finish. Easy to drink very good biere de garde from Adelberts.

On tap at BTBF. Pours with a clear amber-gold body with a lasting tan head. Flavors are of cider, seltzer, sulfur, estery, pear, nutty, caramel and damp leaves. Flavors are watery, nutty, mild sweet caramel, earthy, medium bitter, some pencil eraser. Lively bubbles, dry, thin.

Appearance: Pours clear golden/amber with a big foamy off-white head and good lacing
Aroma: Yeast, bready, dark fruit and spices
Taste: Malty, yeast, spicy with a dry light bitterness in the finish
The more I drink it and let it warm up the more I like it. At first it was harsh and bitter but it mellowed out and ended up being a nice sipper.
