Cold Smoke Scotch Ale earned a silver medal in 2002 and a gold medal in the 2007 NABA brewfest. Formulated with Montana grown 2-row barley, northwest Goldings hops, and lotsa love, this hearty ale drinks very smooth. Not bitter at all and not too sweet either. Novice beer drinkers have been known to take a taste and then say, “WOW! That’s not what I expected… that’s GOOD!” A hint of roasted barley lends a slight coffee-like smoky finish. It packs a 6.5% abv punch. Perfect after a day of rippin’ lines on area or your favorite back country getaway.

Sample during the ElkMoose Me, But Why Is Your Glass MT? event on 07/10/2020. Clear dark brown color with a medium light beige head that recedes steadily to a film. Sparse patches of lace. Roast malt, caramel and hops in the nose. Medium body with flavors of roast malt, caramel, earthy hops and fruit. The finish is sweet and slightly smokey with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Dark brown coloured body with a thick, four to five centimetre tall, rich tan and light brown coloured head that stays afloat for a long time. Aroma of toasted malt, light caramelised sugars, toffee, earth, nuts, grain and a good hit of both lactose and full cream. Medium-bodied; Strong rich nutty and earthy flavours dominate with a lot of creamy and vanilla flavours that show some lactose, a good deal of grain and ending with a very pleasant brown sugar sweetness at the very end. Aftertaste shows the malt, grain, caramelised sugars, earthiness and especially a sweet, brown sugar and almost molasses like flavour. Overall, a very nice scotcch with a ton of brown and caramelised sugars with a lot of earthy and nutty qualities as well. A good option to break through from the hoppy beers that are typically available up here in Montana, but this is a great deep malty option. I sampled this sixteen ounce, full-pint can, purchased from Albertson's in Livingston, Montana on 29-July-2020 for US$2,49 sampled in my hotel room here in Yellowstone National Park (Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel) on 31-July-2020.

16 oz can poured, gifted by Marissa. Thanks! Fun to try a beer from your hometown. A dark but mostly clean copper pour. Toasty aroma, caramel malts. Gentle and easy drinking flavor in this scotch ale. Soft roast, rich caramel. An obvious sweetness going on here, but it's not too much for me. Good beer here overall.

At Glacier Grill & Pizza, Coram. Pours hazy dark brown with a thin, off-white head. The vague aroma contains chocolate, caramel, some hops and licorice, virtually no smoke. It tastes light sweet and light bitter, with a short finish. Light body, rather watery texture, fizzy carbonation. I cannot believe the high overall score for this one (makes me think I had the wrong beer), but it’s not what I expect from a Scotch Ale. Drinkability is not enough to score high marks.

Can from MattW. Nice dark brown pour, scant beige head settled to ring. Ashy, smoky fireplace aroma. Taste is a bit more subdued, earthy hops, a bit sweet for a Scotch. Nice lasting dirty bitterness..

On tap at Gil’s Goods in Livingston. Pours a nice, dark, ruby brown, with no real head. The aroma is toffee, caramel, and some earthy notes. Sweet and malty, with a bit of bitterness. Medium body, crisp, grainy, and smooth. This is a mild and drinkable scotch ale. Not strong nor aggressive, and no real peat or oak which is a shame, but nice and malty.
