We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.
Description: Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer’s art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish.

Aroma is just a tad sweet on an otherwise typical pale beer smell. Pale yellow and clear on the appearance. Some sparkling carbonation inside. Has quite an industrial lager flavor in there, somewhat the flavor I find in many cheaper lagers. This is backed up by some bitter hops, it seems, but not like the bitter hops of ale. This odd bitter bite tends to build thru the session. Decent carbonation on the palate. Alky flavors really tend to be more than the 5% would indicate. Definitely has some personality in this brew. Has a little more offense to it than what I would perceive to be a gentle session summer brew. Finish is lingering odd in process bitterness that hangs for quite a while. End of the session is a little difficult. Not nearly as good as Berkshire Gold Spike or BJs Blonde. On par with Flying Dog Tire Bite Golden Ale or Schell Zommerfest. Just a tad better than New Holland Lucid.

Bottle. Lemon/lemon rind and malt aroma. Golden yellow with a small head. Tart lemon/orange rind and light malt flavor. Light body. The only Koelsch I’ve ever had with any citrus flavor. Not bad but nothing special

My first Kolsch! The beer looks like a pale lager with a quickly descending head and what not. I think that the beer is also unfiltered. It also only smells margainally better than a pale lager. Fortunately for the beer, the taste is nothing like a pale lager. It has an extreme flowery and spicy overtone at the front, then changes to a more doughy taste that ends on a little bitter and dry note.

Not one of my preferred styles. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a pale golden color with a huge white head. The aroma is tangy light malts with a hint of lemon. The flavor is sweet and tangy with a moderate citrusy element. The finish is tangy malts. Not bad for the style.

Pours bright gold into a kolsch glass. Frothy white micro-bubble head leaves sticky lacing. Light honey and grass notes. Upfront fizzy cream malt with a spritly bitter hop finish.

Bottle. Not too bad, citrus and spice aroma. Citrus, spice, and hop flavor. Quite a nice finish, and something I could drink again.
