bottle - I rated 90 beers in a row without a pale lager. I think that’s a personal best. Well that streak is now broken with this abomination of a beer. I got this one in an old dive bar in my college alma mater town of Bowling Green, Ohio. It’s a place called Howard’s that was the town livery about 100 years ago. I don’t think they’ve made many improvements since then. The floors are concrete and the seating is mostly old picnic tables. It’s the place to go when you want to hear some live music during your downward spiral. Just try not to spiral any lower as the next step is probably drinking malt liquor wrapped in a brown paper bag while slumped in an alley. Oh wait, was I supposed to be rating the beer? If you’re in a place like Howard’s, you’ve got to order a beer like Schlitz. It doesn’t smell like much and the flavor of this thin, watery beer is a light, corn-adjunct laden mess that couldn’t possibly make any brewer proud. No matter. So order that Schlitz, worm your way through the college kids to the front row in front of the band, chug your beer if you can stand it, and rock on. Come on, you can do it! You have not yet begun to defile yourself.

Draught. Poured pale urine yellow with thin fast dissipating head. Aroma of sweat, maze and cardboard. Tastes like week old rusks left to gather moisture. No finish.

This is definitely what I would consider the ubiquitous pale yellow american lager, the perfect example. 12 oz can that was about 38 cents per can at Beer and Pop for Less in Moon Twp. Has a small creamy white head, a little more than I’m used to in a pale lager. Aroma is corny and beery yeasty. Gentle continuous streams of carbonation within the brew. Taste is rather mild with just a touch of hops, after all, it is just a kiss of hops as stated on the front of the can. Hey, this is the beer that made Milwaukee famous, and I always thought it was Harley-Davidson! A well behaved mild lager that is easy to drink. The finish does have a very mild metallic bitterness that hangs for a few after you swallow. Overall a pretty decent example of a fizzy yellow american lager. Above average but not quite as good as Schmidt’s or Old German. Good price and easy to drink. This doesn’t seem to be the same recipe as I remember from 20 years ago.

12 oz. can. Hey, now; "When you’re out of Schlitz, you’re out of beer!" Big corny smell when opened, with some pale malt behind it. Usual pasteurized lager head: fizzes for a moment, then it’s just a scrum on the yellow body (so I guess appearance is normal for this style). But smell up close in the glass gets medicine-y, like a malt liquor–though it would cut through at, say, a bowling alley, to remind you that ya got a beer in front of ya. This impression, unfiltered by nostalgia, is that the taste is typical manufactured cheap beer. Seems more malt syrup than mashed malts, and so little bitterness that even "Just the Kiss of the Hops" doesn’t even describe it. There may be a little more body here than, say, a Hamm’s, but I wonder if it was ever a good beer. And just like that, I’m outta Schlitz… Schlitz outta luck.

Can. So back in college we bought a case of this to celebrate (?) my buddy not crashing his car. No one finished a can... and we weren’t exactly beer savy at the time. A horrid metallic taste and a complete lack of other flavoring. I’d rather drink... well, lots of things

I gotta start avoiding these macro pale lagers, they mostly taste the same, and frankly, I can’t say too much good about it.

Definately not a good beer, but at least it is a beer and a relatively drinkable one at that. This is cheap and relatively inoffensive. Not too much taste or anything in that vein. My father told me that he used to drink the real stuff back on the day, this seems to be just a pale (lager) reflection. I would drink it again above many other cheap-o beers.

Can. Sour malt aroma with hint of lemon. Light golden yellow with small head. Straight barley malt flavor - only the slightest hint of sweetness. Quite a surprise - the can label is like an old friend from my childhood as I probably saw ten thousand empty Schlitz cans while riding my bike through my neighborhood. Just as good as any other BMC pale lager and much cheaper. If it’s good enough for Martini’s Bar, it’s good enough for me.

Ah, the beer that made Milwaukee famous eh? Perhaps Milwaukee should sue them for the defamation. I have not had Schlitz for about 24 years now, so I really have no memory of this beer.+++ Sampled this time from a 16 oz can this beer poured a straw yellow color with a large bleach white head. Sour macro smell. The flavor is light and dominated by corn. Surprisingly smooth but then again it has no body to speak of. Bland yet surprisingly inoffensive. No aftertaste to speak of. The corn really comes out as it warms up.
