A lovely dark malt showcase. Moderately sweet, good roast, chocolate, a smokey accent, some earth, raisins. Well balanced. Sweet but definitely not cloying. Restrained bitterness to finish, a little ashy dryness. Just a really solid stout all around.

Can from Morrisons, South Gyle, Edinburgh. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee and light smoke. Taste is coffee, smoke and vanilla, some bitter dark chocolate. Smooth and creamy texture.

Roasted malt, floral hop, some coffee, smoke and chocolate, hints of vanilla. Over medium body, below average carbonation. Over moderate sweet, moderate bitterness.

Can on 1st July 2026 from CPK, Pimlico. Pours impenetrably black with a rapidly shrinking brown foam and scant lacing. Earthy roastiness in aroma with freshly ground coffee and dark chocolate. Rich and intense dark chocolates and coffees in-mouth and a lasting, satisfying earthy mocha finish. Smooth mouthfeel and a full body. Absolutely exquisite.

Can shared. Almost black with short lasting head. Laurel, licorice, leather, earthy, blackberries, dry oats, oak, toffee. Over medium sweet and bitter. Full bodied, oily feel.

Black with a tan head. Good roasty malt notes, light smoke, dark chocolate, earth, caramel, light licorice. Full, creamy body. Finish has dark roasted malt, burnt coffee, some faint smoke, and a dab of sweetness. It’s a fine stout but doesn’t do much to stand out.

Northern Monk Canned Trio At Home #3 of 3. I thought I'd saved the based for last, with a large blast of chocolate in the initial sips, although its more boozy-sweet character took more hold after this, the chocolate is light but pleasant. Earthy notes are apparent in this enjoyable enough black coloured imperial. By the end of the glass the chocolate was heavy once again.

Can at home picked up from Tesco. A jet black oily coloured pourw ith a lasting light tan head. Aroma is bitter black malt, liquorice, salty liquorice, singed pine, eartyh, light soap. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, salty liquorice, black malts, light spice, savoury, burnt toast, spicy finish. Bit too savoury, moderate carbonation. Basic, high boost stout.
