This strong, nutty, full strength dark beer (5.5% ABV) has built a cult following amongst real ale aficionados since it was first brewed for bottles in 1949. The oaky and roasted flavour, with its deep and distinctive taste, make it a cask-conditioned beer with a real difference.

Cask at Prince of Wales, Farnborough. 21/06/16. Vague earthy aroma. Dark and deep looking but not much to the beige head. Smooth with a slight bitter edge to the dark chocolate taste. A nice old school pint.

Cask at Derehams Inn beer festival, High Wycombe. Deep amber with a thick creamy head and a light sparkle. A woody beer. A whole antique wardrobe full of old varnished wood in fact, with just a hint of toffee, chocolate and earthiness behind. As traditional as it gets, and sometimes thatโs no bad thing. Possibly needs a higher abv to give it a bit more oomph and some more sweetness, but itโs a decent beer nevertheless.
