Spicy and herbal Marynka hops and two row and caramel malt from the city of Gdansk create a balanced, amber ale. Originally brewed to celebrate the 1200th anniversary of the home of one of our favorite breweries from the Polish Beer Trip, this style commemorates both Polish brewing history and Harpoon tradition.

Crisp amber coloured body with a copper glow and a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of caramel, light malt, a touch of nuts and only a small amount of earthy hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive malty flavour with caramel the strongest flavour, but some nuts are also around, along with grapes, yeast and a hint of pitted fruits. Aftertaste shows a mellow character, but the malt hits strong and hard, in a good way. Aside from the malt, only a touch of sweetness is around from caramel. Overall, a nice touch on a local and relatively simple style, but naturally not a great beer in terms of American brewing. Definitely worth trying if you like lighter styles or if you are Polish (as I am!) for some heritage tasting. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom), DC on 19-February-2014 for US$5.99 sampled at home in Washington on 30-July-2014.

22oz bottle from Orchard Fresh, Orchard Park, NY. An attractive pale copper coloured pour with a scummy looking cream head; carmal malt aroma; soft, velvety caramel taste with some zingy spice leading to a sweet fruity toffee finish. Rather good.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 3/15/14

Aroma: The nose is sweet malts, caramel, some apple/fruit, spice, and a little bread
Appearance: Pours a clear orange color with a frothy off-white head and average lace
Flavor: Sweet and that’s about it, there’s a little spice, but not enough of anything else to balance it
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a soft carbonation, and a clean, easy drinking feel
Overall Impression: Re-finished all the beer styles (until they add another one)! Not a bad beer, but it lacks balance for the sweetness. Well-made and drinks nicely, but for me it just isn’t interesting enough or complex enough to get a higher score than this.

Poured a reddish brown into the pint glass. Large white head, aroma of caramel malt, grass, herbal notes, tea? dunno. Taste is the same, nice lager finish, fat mouthfeel. Ends with a grassy hay hop character. Interesting beer, glad to try the style.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 3/15/2014. Pours slightly hazy pale orange copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of caramel, pear, apple, grape, toast, biscuit, floral, grass, herbal, clove, pepper, and herbal earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of bready malt, yeast, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, biscuit, pear, apple, grape, floral, grass, herbal, clove, pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of earthy herbal/floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, pear, apple, grape, floral, grass, herbal, pepper, clove, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, robustness, and complexity of malt, hop, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Polish old ale style. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of malt, hop, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. Really enjoyed this one.
