Some say the origin of this ale is shrouded in a dark mystery. Others say its origin can be traced back to the Cascadia region, where it was named. We say stop reading already and enjoy this hoppy brew with its tanned marshmallow-like foam top, while the aroma of fresh-cut Douglas fir and delicate scent of toffee dance below the surface. After all, some mysteries are best left unknown, while others are left to be drunk.

Tap at North Park Beer Bankers Hill, in San Diego, 28th February 2025. Sat outside, trying to get some sun, this pours blackish. Aroma is dusty cocoa, aromatic, roasted malts and flavour is medium bitter, mellow, fruity, light aromatic

Bottle from Mid Columbia. Brown color with a large beige head. Aroma is a balance of piney and citrus hops with light roast. Flavor is on the bitter side with the roasted malts being less prominent. Light pine and citrus sweetness. Overall a well balanced beer. Glad they didn't call it a Black IPA cause it screams CDA.

On tap at the brewery pours out dark brown topped with a sand head. Nose is nice crisp pine citrus hops with a chocolate roast touch of smoke. Taste is more of the nice roast malts with pine and citrus.

Taster at brewery. Dark brown with small creamy head. Aroma is light sweet malts. taste brings in a slight gentle happiness, still based on the malts though. Not your typical CDA, really really tasty.

Bottle. Pours a nearly pitch black color with a large beige head. A nice roasted malt nose, some chocolate and toast. The flavor leans heavily toward the porter or stout side, chocolate and milky roast, but big ashy notes, citrus, robust pine. Quite nice. This is a beer I could easily have a few pints of and be very happy.

Black with a light tan head. Roasted malts, some pine, with a medium bitter finish. Neither the pine hops nor the roasted meats are too intense which makes this black IPA work better than most. Very good BIPA but I’ve never cared for the style.

Draught at Collective on Tap, Woodinville, WA
Black color with compact beige head. A lot of roasted malt character, but also caramel, with light residual sweetness; bold hopping, in the average with other CDAs; a light toasty note in the final adds balance.
Very nice.

Draft - Lightly roast and tons of pine. Deep dark brown with a rich beige head. Roasty, with lots of pine and a roasty finish. Quiet nice and balanced,
