There is no doubt variety is the spice of life and we love going off in all kinds of directions looking for new flavors. Like all travel though at some point your heart turns back toward home. Home, robust American ales. This route travels along a path of piney American hops, Simcoe, Cluster, and Horizon their natural course coaxed toward spicy by a touch of rye. Drink Red Rye Returning because home is where the hops is.

Can to nonic pint glass.
Appearance: nice looking dark red color with a two and a half fingers of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: lots of rye - deep floral, sweet and spicy rye tones running through a great dose of piney hops, great balance of malts entering in
Flavor: follows the aroma - sweet, spicy and floral character, crisp spicy and floral rye aftertaste
Texture: medium bodied, more of a sipper, some rye sting but I expected that, good carb, finishes crisp floral, semi-dry and spicy
Overall: a stellar rye beer, not sure if I would go as far as to label this a Roggenbier but hey, I've only had so many Roggenbiers in life. Still, I'd return to this.

Notes from October 2012 32oz growler from Whole Foods. Faceted whiskey glass. Very slightly hazed, cola brown body. Inch of sunken, off-white head. Smells of brown bread, alcohol, & rind. Not very attractive so far. Gritty/chewy, slightly charred malt. More dry then bittersweet. The beer is really dominated by a pithy, herbal bitterness that just lingers. Works better in their IPA then it does here. Toasty, tannic/tea-like finish. Probably the weakest offering from Carton that I've had so far. Several other awesome beers in their limited portfolio though. I could drink BOAT or Monkey Chase till I vomit down. Just a bump in the road.

Growler from Super Buy-Rite in Monroe, NJ. Pours a deep copper color topped by a small creamy beige head. Toasted malt nose touches on earthy rye and faint caramel. First sip is tangy, nutty toasted malt with light bitter notes. Tastes like taking a walk in the woods in the fall as the leaves are starting to drop and the pine needles are drying out. Warming alcohol in midtaste. Spicy hop finish is appreciated. Toasty, piney, woody and definitely Cartonic.

Draught @ Shannon Rose. Slightly cloudy reddish amber with small foamy beige head, faint floral aroma, medium carbonation, bitter taste on smooth caramel-rye base, thin body, long bitter caramel finish. Quite smooth and tasty.

Tap at RnH, NYC. Deep amber color, medium-sized off-white head. Aroma has resin, pine and some caramel. Medium-bodied. Piney, resiny hoppyness with some earthy notes. Cant trace rye here, otherwise decent ipa.

32oz growler from Superstar Beverage Huntington pours a hazy amber with some frothy, white head. Nose has some sweetness, some apple/pear, some malt, some citrus, orange, pine. Flavor is the same, mild peppercorn, apple, some caramel, pine, soap, orange. Crisp finish. Very nice.

Winter Beer Fest, Philly: Pours amber with off-white head. Aroma is rye and pine. Taste is rather bitter. Lots of tropical fruit. Nice aftertaste. Pretty good, though the other people in my party were not too impressed by this. I thought it was one of Carton’s good beer.
