A cask only beer brewed to be poured exclusively from firkins, either via gravity from the bar top or through a beer engine. This traditional British ale is authentic cask conditioned beer with a smooth malt profile balanced by a subtle hop presence. Dry -hopping in the cask produces an enticing hop aroma in this quaffable session ale.

Johnny Brenda’s, Philly cask ($6): Pours an orange colour with a short lived white head. Aroma is of toffee and malt. This is a subtle beer, but it is superbly done. Nothing intense here, but perfect balance and perfect texture. Mildly bitter and ever so slightly sweet.

A dark amber ale with a thin white head. A light caramel malt aroma with light vegetable notes. In mouth, a rather boring ESB with light malt, watery and flat, some nutty notes, light metallic hops. Boring. On cask at the People’s Real Ale Fest, Clarke’s Ale House, April 30 2010.
