We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Bruce. Pours unclear amber-copper with a bubbly off-white head. The nose has ripe pumpkin, caramel, some wood, orange. Medium sweet flavor with boozy kick, rich pumpkin syrup, some autumnal spices. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Hot finish, caramel, sugar syrup, rich pumpkin, bread. Heavy-hitting stuff but pretty tasty. Not bad.

Bottle thanks to Bruce? It pours deep mahogany brown with minimal head. The nose is wood, soft fruits, pumpkin, earth, spice, vanilla, butter squash, and candy. The taste is bitter-sweet, wood, squash, pumpkin, spice, vanilla, wood, light alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation, a big pumpkin bastard, but decent enough.

Bottle, 2013 thanks to OKBeerFan! Pours hazy chestnut amber with a small quickly dissipating tan head that leaves a ring and some lacing. Aroma is rummy for sure, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, light funkiness, toffee, orange zest. Lots of pumpkin flesh present. Flavor has all of the above, fairly spiced, quite boozy. Sweet and sticky, only a bit of bitterness. Very rummy. A bit too sweet and spiced for me to really get into. Nothing even remotely subtle about this beer. Holy cow. Updated with a 2014 bottle thanks to Brian - same impression, but a bit more balanced perhaps.

Sample at Kurtkeller 001: Pumpkin-tastic 01 on 11/22/2013. Hazy ruby-amber color with a medium frothy light brown head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing. The aroma consists of ginger, pumpkin and rum. Full-bodied sipper with flavors of pumpkins, charred marshmallow, vanilla and rum. The finish is boozy rum with a lingering baked pumpkin and vanilla aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Pours tranlucent orange with no head, no lacing, and carbonation. Aroma is pumpkin and medium body. Taste is pumpkin, rum, oak, and a hint of alcohol. Not easy to drink, but if you sip it, it is pretty good. The alcohol is well covered for 18%.
