Paradox Compass Box is the latest of our whisky cask aged imperial stouts to be released from its smoky, shadowy cocoon.
Our huge stout was aged in Compass Box great King Street barrels for 221 days before bottling.
Full bodied, crashing roasty malt flavours are tempered by a rich chocolate character, balanced with light smoke and an extra layer of orange oil complexity.
Malts: Cara, Carafa, Dark Crystal, Extra Pale, Munich
Hops: Columbus, First Gold, Saaz

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines shared with Sarkynorthener; dark brown pour with a creamy light tan head, big roast malt and chocolate aroma, taste has big roast malts, chocolate, tar, sweet chocolate, a hint of whisky, ABV of 15% isn’t present.

Draft @ BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush, Shepherd’s Bush W12. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty woody whisky chocolate and caramel aroma. Roasted malty woody whisky chocolate and caramel flavor. Has a roasted malty woody whisky and chocolate finish.

Pours pitch black with a smooth brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, whisky, oak, vanilla, toffee, syrup, molasses and loads of licorice. Taste is smooth, heavy and roasty with loads of oak, wood, vanilla, toffee, roastiness and syrup. Finish is heavy, sweetish and roasty with loads of licorice, toffee, oak and vanilla. Heavy and sweetish, yet tasty and roasty.

(Keg at HBF2015) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had vanilla, whisky, burnt malts and chocolate. Palate was full bodied and almost burning with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, sweetness, booze, whisky, vanilla and bitterness. Aftertaste was boozy and bitter. A very boozy brew.

Bottle split at the Farewell to Bruce’s Pad Tasting, thanks to Daniel, 27/03/15. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is light spice, dark fruit mix, raisens, charr, molasses, booze fumes, dark chocolate. Taste is earthy, light smoke, chocolate, spice, touch of Xmas cake mix. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid enough impy, drinks well below the 15%, smoke balance is good.

Brewdog Camden. Keg. Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is soft and a little viscous. Decent fine carbonation. The dark malts are sweetish with really good dark chocolate and it’s proper tasting dark chocolate, not some pseudo cheap cocoa powder shite! Little malt cream. Chocolate liqueur and a little brandy. More spice before a semi dry finish. Smooth, well integrated and impressively drinkable.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Daniel. Pours oily black with a creamy beige head. Lots of dark malt character in the nose, dark fruits, burnt wood, cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with bitter chocolate, booze, vanilla, more burnt wood, scorched earth, marshmallows. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with some gooey chocolate. Bitter dark chocolate finish, licorice, leathery dark fruits. Quite bold.

Bottle thanks to Dan. It pours darkest brown with a tiny beige head. The nose is bitter-sweet, juicy, dark chocolate, vanilla, toasty coconut, rocky road, dried fruits, blended malt and treacle. The taste is smooth, bitter-earth, rich roast, grass, charred wood, warming booze, rocky road, whisky and light spice with a dry, warming finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Slick and warming. Solid.
