We’ve been brewing our robust American Porter since 1916. A beer with enough backbone to carry us through Prohibition and beyond. Narragansett Brewing received one of only six patents granted by the U.S. government to brew this beer for “medicinal purposes” from 1920 – 1933. These days, whether you call it ‘Gansett Dark like some old time local fishermen, or just plain Porter, you’ll love this hardy and deliciously nuanced brew. It’s not winter in New England unless you’re enjoying a Narragansett Porter.

Pours a rich dark brown from a can, light tan head with some lacing. Light coffee and roasted malt, well-toasted brown bread. Similar flavor, bitter, faint pine in the background. Good beer.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Slight lace.
The aroma had a nice blend of roast to sweet chocolate malts and coffee portions. Light vanilla, some caramel, touch of earthiness round out the end.
The flavor blended the previously mentioned aromas fairly nice to slide right on into the aftertaste and follow through on the finish.
The palate was almost medium bodied, seemed to sit just a touch under and having a good carbonation and ABV. Smooth yet balancing roastiness guided the feel nicely along my tongue.
Overall, pretty good porter I could do again.

Rich deep brown coloured body with a ruby and violet glow at the bottom with a rich, thick, five centimetre tall rich milky brown head. Aroma of alcohol, roasted malt, nuts, peanut butter, chocolate, bread, cherries and some subdued lactic notes. Medium-bodied; Rich chocolate flavour with a big malt presence, some nuts and earthiness, a little hop bitterness and a slight metallic and medicinal note at the end. Aftertaste is relatively mild with the malt and nutty flavours coming through the most and a good milky finish showing a good depth, if not much complexity. Overall, a fairly respectable porter, not a great one, but drinkable and the can is nice for many occassions. I sampled this 50 cL can purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 13-July-2013 for US$2.00 sampled at home after returning from New York a day earlier, on 04-November-2013.

16 ounce can. Pours a dark brown color topped by a big rocky tan head. Faint roasted malt aroma with a touch of baked bread and toffee. Roasted malt flavor has a distinctive bitter character, much like unsweetened baker’s chocolate. There are nuances of cocoa, charcoal and mild smokiness here, but the underlying bitterness stays with this porter from start to finish. A nice balance of malt and hops that make this a tasty American-style porter. At $8 for six 16 ounce cans this is a great value as well!

The bodega next door, six-pack of cans: Pours is dark brown with a Guinness coloured head. Aroma is mediocre chocolate, with some chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is slightly bitter, and, as another person has noted, there is kind of a bitter chalky taste. It is pretty smooth and easy drinking and has a hefty dosage of booze, so that is dank fo sho.

Can. Dark brown color, light tan spongy head with good retention, slightly flat coffee taste, long finish. Little bit watery for a porter.

Can. And, in fact, drinking from the can, I couldn’tvreally tell what color it was. Dark, probably. It also had an aroma, I’m sure. Taste was kind of a dull chocolate milk and coffee.
