We’ve been brewing our robust American Porter since 1916. A beer with enough backbone to carry us through Prohibition and beyond. Narragansett Brewing received one of only six patents granted by the U.S. government to brew this beer for “medicinal purposes” from 1920 – 1933. These days, whether you call it ‘Gansett Dark like some old time local fishermen, or just plain Porter, you’ll love this hardy and deliciously nuanced brew. It’s not winter in New England unless you’re enjoying a Narragansett Porter.

16 ounce can. Pours a dark brown color with a thin creamy head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts with a sweet finish. Fairly faint. The taste is sweet malts, some roastiness, faint fruits and leafy hops. Medium bodied. A bit too sweet but still a solid beer.

Can with Sander at his place. Decent roast aroma, some mild tobacco and cocoa. Medium sweet flavor, some earth, cigar smoke, burnt sugar. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish, modest roast, some dark sugar, light dirty bitterness of earth, mild charcoal. Pretty decent.

16 oz. can from Market Basket, Portsmouth, NH. Used an English Pint. Thick, full beige head. Decent retention. Nose is Chocolate and a large amount of grain. Taste has a clean roasted character with hints of molasses and a nice German hop. Well, it reminds me of a German or Euro hop. Medium body, maybe a bit on the thin side. I got to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this. It’s MUCH better than some of the ratings indicate. And the price is a bargain.

Dark beer with a creamy beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, light vanilla, light molasses. Medium smooth body. Lightly roasted malts, a bit of cocoa, some vanilla notes, earthy hops. A nice and straight forward porter. Good stuff.

When I walked by and saw these 16oz cans of porter sitting on the display I just couldn’t resist taking them home with me. Like my daughters at the pet store, only I had the money in my pocket to make the purchase. Pours a pretty solid dark brown/black color with a big fluffy tan head that slowly dissipates to a cap on top. Oh my god there is actually roast in the aroma. Lots of coffee and hint of chocolate on the nose with a slightly tart fruitiness in there as well. Taste is sweet up front with that acridic dark roasted malt flavor. Coffee roast dominates the taste with some distant tart fruit and wet dog in there. Finishes like a coffee coolada from Dunkins, sweet with a lingering coffee bitterness. Creamy bordering on bitter in the mouth, medium level of carbonation and body. I really wasn’t expecting much from this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Reminds me a bit of a dry Irish stout. This certainly isn’t going to rock your world but is a nice drinker. I might just have to put this in the rotation every now and again.

Can thanks to mattolesh. Pours with a black body and a small tan head that slowly fades. Aromas are fruity, estery, toffee, light chocolate, roasty, low hop notes. Flavors are roasty, peanutshells, chocolate, earthy, soil, coffee, esters and a bit acrid. Lively carbonation. Cola notes. Thin.

Location: Draft at RnH, 2/12/11

Aroma: The nose has a little chocolate, roasted malty notes, and light earthy hints
Appearance: The pour is a dark brown-black color with light brown head
Flavor: The taste is fairly malty, standard-to-dull porter flavors
Palate: The body is medium, mouthfeel was a touch on the watery side.
Overall Impression: My first rating from the smallest in the union! That's a nice ticker note that is basically irrelevant. Ironically, I live much closer to the smallest state then the largest, but I have rated 217 of their beers before rating one for RI. I guess you could assume from that anecdote that state size does play a role in beer production and distribution. You could also assume that I like to include meaningless information in my beer ratings. Both of those assumptions seem fairly safe. Anywho, to me this was really just a very average porter. Not too much else to say, hence the state related rampling that happened above.
