Coffee notes? Check. Porter notes? Check. A coffee beer that any brewer could make? Better check again. This is VJP – an easygoing dark beer with the makings of both a sweet-vanilla coffee house java and a smoky English style porter. Despite its looking every bit as black as a regular dark roast Joe, it goes down like it’s frothy with cream and sugar. Sip and ‘ahhh.’

bottle - This beer pours very dark brown with a tan head. It smells of dark roast malt, vanilla and coffee as one would expect from the name. The flavor is mainly roast malt and vanilla. It’s milder and lighter bodied than I expected. While the flavor is alright, it’s too light all the way around.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Opaque black color with a 2-finger tan head. Aromas of coffee and vanilla. It’s mostly frothy carbonation, so the body is difficult to pin down. Flavor is primarily coffee with some vanilla. Towards the finish some chocolate shows up. Almost tart, almost sour, the finish is not sweet, but it’s not exactly bitter. Rather different brew.

Terrible. I like the idea and some of these vanilla beers, like Breckenridge, are good. This one is black and has a strange aroma of chili peppers. Some roasted malt. 2 2 4 2 6-------------- rerate: much better. Coffee and some vanilla. A thin palate, but good flavor and much more drinkable this time.

12oz bottle....dark dark brown , appears black at first...smells burnt--burnt watery coffee like 2-3 days in the pot...flavor is very similar to the aroma with some added vanilla extract and perhaps some soured cream...all this tastes liker it was served out a rusted copper coffee cup....body is unbalanced and even acidic and tart, which is something I don’t like in my porter...price on the shelf was $4.95!!!...but It was given to me for free...thank goodness!!

Dark ruby beer, with a moderate frothy lace - rather bland aroma of artificial vanilla, odd tartness, and some roasty notes - thin-bodied and flavored - mild vanilla and weak-ass coffee - some ash/tobacco - not much else - blah.

Nice deep dark brown coloured body with soda-like bubbles and a thinnish fast-fading brown head. Aroma of strong metal, blood, vinegar, grapes, roasted malt and a meaty funkiness. Medium-bodied; Very effervescent nuttiness coupled with malt and a bit of interesting grape tastes found. Aftertaste shows a bit more complex taste with mushrooms, toffee and an overriding oaky and vanilla taste. Overall, a strong flavoured interesting tasting beer that doesn’t show enough porter to be good. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25-February2008.

Dark black body with a small creamy light brown head. Sweet roasted coffee aroma with a bare trace of vanilla. Some light sourness on the nose. Dark roasted coffee flavor, slightly burned with a touch of vanilla in the end with hints of burnt toast.

Bottle. Smells of a slight roasted coffee aroma, with a touch of vanilla. To be honest this beer was only so-so in the flavor department. It was far too subtle, and to be honest was a little weak and watery.

Average fizzy diminishing head atop a dark brown body. Average aroma of roasted malts, coffee and vanilla and a rubbery smell. Moderately sweet flavor and only lightly bitter. Moderately acidic. Light to medium body that is way overcarbonated. The aftertaste is like pencil lead. Average or a little below.

Bottle. Pours like a Coke. Lots of fizzy head that dies down even quicker than a cola. This all covers a dark brown body, but after a few seconds things die down and there is no trace of the head. Aromas are weak and hint at burnt malt... coffee with a little peat. Flavor of molasses with a touch of an earthy character and a sweet vanilla finish. Ho hum.
