Unique and limited edition, this Belgian style ale is crafted once a year as a special treat for those of you who appreciate flavorful, bottle-conditioned ales with character.

This year’s vintage: a rich, dark and full-bodied ale with a fine and generous coffee-colored, beige foam. It’s ready to enjoy right away and you may also wish to cellar a few bottles. It will evolve interestingly well, developing more complex flavors as the years go by.

750 c&c from Trader Joe’s in Davis, CA. Pours dark brown with orange glints and a creamy, somewhat fizzy, tan head. Aromas of dark fruit, some brown sugar, and a touch of anise. Full bodied. Flavor has more anise than the aroma suggested. Heat’s not an issue til it reaches the esophagus. Finishes pretty much per the flavor, with the addition of some bitterness. Somewhere a suggestion of the flavors commonly found in a wit (minus the citrus) comes out. Moderately complex and tasty ale.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark, dark brown / near-black with a big foamy beige head. Aroma of various spices (cumin, cinnamon and maybe ginger), star anise, and some candied sugar. Flavour brings out lots of spices, star anise, some dark dried fruits, lots of Belgian yeast, and candied sugar. The spices and anise are the most dominant flavours, with a healthy yeast profile, and very high, lively carbonation. All the different flavours work well together, with the carbonation being slightly too high, but not too detracting. Great stuff - always interesting from Unibroue.

C&C 750 mL bottle from Trader Joe’s Virginia Beach. Pours a clear dark brown color with a huge brown foamy head (4 fingers atop 3 fingers of beer. Aroma of big spice notes, candi sugar, chestnuts, herbal notes and tart fruits. The taste is candi sugar, pineapple, stone fruits, spices, herbal hops. Very fruity. High carbonation, medium bodied. Decent.

750ml bottle pours a mostly opaque black with garnet edges and a thin, creamy, off white head. Nose of dark fruit, plum, prunes, raisins, ginger, clove, some banana, a little pineapple. Flavor was similar, raisins, prune juice, cane sugar, rum, cloves, plum, pear. Full bodied, lightly spicy finish. You know, for $4.99 for a 750ml, this is a decent deal. Not sure I’d age this year’s batch though.

Ah, it’s that time of year again - $4.99 750ml bottles of Unibroue beer! Poured a dark brown with a light tan, fluffy head. Aroma was sweet dark fruits, some brown sugar notes. Flavor was sweet dark, dried fruits, brown sugar, with some light spice notes. Alcohol is pretty well subdued - drank the entire bottle over the course of an evening.

Pour is a dark brown, darker than I remember past vintages, with a large tan head. Aroma is musty yeast, big spice like a nutmeg and dark fruit. Flavor is is more of a earthy sweet malt to start then comes a nice berry and spice after the swallow. I can’t remember these things from one year to the next but they are always above par and affordable. This years seems to have a bit more spice and berry.

750 mL bottle. Pours black with a large light tan head. Cloves and other spices in the aroma, coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger. Flavor also features the same set of spices, creating a gingerbread cookie feel, but with more cloves and bubble gum and a bit of a smoky note. Hint of raisin. Definitely good.
