Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles.
Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor.

Bottle - Dark brown with red tinges. Fruity and slightly smoky aroma with notes of dried fruit and hops. Fruity and slightly hoppy taste with notes of raisins, pine and nuts.

Sample at a tasting at Systembolaget, September 2012. Clear dark brown. Sweet aroma of toffee, some very light notes of roasted malt, chocolate and light notes of hops. The same in the taste. Black IPA?

Drat. Dark clear maroon color, small tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of peppery coffee grounds. Taste is bitter coffee and cocoa. Not bad.

This brew pours brownish-black with a medium creamy light beige head that recedes slowly to a film. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and hops. Medium body with a roasty character and flavors of flowery hops, bready malt, toffee and fruit. The finish is roasty with a moderately bitter hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Purchased at Breeze Thru Wine & Spirits in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed at a good friends house while watching the White Sox deconstruct but come back. Appearance is a very very dark ruby brown with a moderate off white head that rims around the glass. Aroma smells potent, bit hoppy for sure with a mix between grassy and citrus hops, maybe a bit of malt as well. Taste very potent, almost more so than a baltic porter, slight bitterness. Its good, wouldn’t do this again though. 5/15/13 re-rate, I did this again...and for some reason much better than before, maybe fresher? Bumping up rating.

Bottle. Toffee malt and pine aroma. Dark brown with large tan head. Sweet chocolate toffee malt and strong bitter grapefruit and pine hops flavor. Bitter aftertaste. Pretty good.

bottle - Dark brown pour that smells of roasted malt and underlying citrus hops. The flavor has good bitterness balanced by dark roast malt with the roast lingering on the palate even moreso than the hops. It’s medium bodied and good. Not great.

12oz bottle poured into an English Pint. Pours a clear and dark with a slight ruby hue and about 2 fingers of khaki head. Aroma is mostly pine and floral hops. Taste is light bitter. Floral and pine with a hint of bready malt. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin texture. Soft carbonation and a decently long finish. Overall, not bad. I plan to drink this one again.

Bottle: Poured a light black color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry roasted malt with some pine floral hoppy notes. Taste is a mix between some lightly dry roasted malt notes with a pretty solid pine and citrus hoppy notes with a balanced bitter finish. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting experience that I wouldn’t mind having again.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear vibrant copper color with a medium off-white head. The aroma is caramel and some toast. A rich orange and pine flavor with caramel and dry earthy malts. Seems a bit like a pale ale with only a bit of porter heft. Very tasty.
