Another entry into Sam Adams Small Batch Series – Dark Depths. Depths is a IPA or a hoppy porter brewed with a lager yeast for an interesting mesh of styles.
Across the cold and brackish waters of the Baltic, the English Porter was transferred, from a mild ale to a dark and complex lager that confounds definition. Immersed in dark, roasted malts and a bold citrus hop character, these big and contrasting flavors are brought together with the smoothness of a lager for a brew that’s bold, mysterious, and full of flavor.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with Beige head. The aroma is a roasted malt and smoke. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet roasted malt. Easy to drink A very good black IPA from BBc.

Bottle @ home. Cloudy, deep brown appearance with a thick brown head and good lacing. Piney, earthy hoppy, a touch organic, roasty malty aroma. Light anise, burnt malty, piney-organic hoppy flavor. Ok.

Pours a crystal clear deep brown with garnet highlights when held to light, huge frothy off white head has great retention and leaves lots of sticky lace on the way down. Smells very hoppy! Lots of pine and garlic with a little bit of caramel and roast to counter, but this one is all about hops. Taste holds a nice sweet caramel and chocolate malt backbone on top of a plethora of pine, resin, and green onion. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet resinous mouthfeel. I liked this one, in fact the bottle found its way empty much to quickly. My one criticism is that there is eminently more IPA than Baltic Porter in my glass. I found this more like a Black IPA with a hint more roast. Tasty brew, hard to put in a category.
