Starr Saison is a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale. It is crisp and complex with plenty of fruitiness, hints of earth, and refreshing hop aroma and bitterness.

Pours golden with ok head and lacing and some funk in the finish. Comes together well with some hay and some funky wildness. Average carbonation. Finishes lightly sour. On tap at DC Beer Festival.

Bottle. Pours golden with lotsa bubbles rising from the bottom; has an inch of white head. Smells of wheat and grass. Tastes of sweet grasses, wheat, oats, and a hint of skunk.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz: Pours golden with no head, Aroma is fruity and yeasty. I think that this bottle might be bad or something. Taste is kind of bitter with a sort of sugary layer to it. Not very pleasant to drink. I feel bad for judging this harshly, but it is what I had. Turnover is pretty quick at Total Wine, especially of a Virginia brewery in the New Arrivals section, so I doubt that the bottle is that old.

This beer pours a clear copper color with a medium off-white head that evaporates quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of fruit, yeast and grain. Light to medium body with flavors of ripe fruit, earthy yeast and a touch of bready malt. The finish is fruity with a sweet malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

12oz bottle pours a hazy, straw gold with some creamy, white head. Nose of candy sugar, tropical fruit, apricot, honey candies. Flavor is the same, sweet, light hay, tropical fruit, candy sugar. Medium, slightly artificial finish.

Funky pear nose, sharp cheese accents. Clear amber, medium head. Malty pear flavor, green apple and lemongrass also present. A little too sweet, but a solid offering.

Clear copper coloured body with a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of yeast, pepper, hay, grass, banana, clove and plenty of sweetness. Light to Medium-bodied; Earthy maltiness with a lot of yeast and coriander seed, some light grass and hay, a dense syrupy sweetness and a deep bready flavour that finishes off the beer. Aftertaste is quite robust with the yeast front and centre with curacao and lemons battling with hay and grass for dominance and a light but noticeable sweetness at the tail end. Overall, a nice and refreshing saison that hits harder in the yeast and alcohol than it does with grassy and herbal characteristics. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 01-August-2012 for US$6.99 (good deal) sampled at home in Washington on 27-August-2012.
