Black Ale Brewed With Coffee Beans. RED EYE Coffee porter is one of a series of special limited run beers in styles that are more EXTREME or unusual. Porter’s an elusive dark ale that has been constantly changing during its long 300 year history. We figured it was about RIPE for some REINVENTION.

I’m glad this is a red eye and not a brown eye. Draft. Dark maroon color, thick tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of nuts and toast. Taste is fiamy cafe macchiato. Nice.

Bomber. Pours a totally black color with a small beige head. A big coffee nose with some roast and light char. A very tasty brew: rich coffee, milky and sweet, light dark fruit, roast, chocolates. I’m not a huge coffee lover so this isn’t made to be my thing but it is very well done and good.

On tap. Pours a somewhat translucent dark brown with a brown head hat dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice combination of roasted malts and coffee with a hint of a creamy dark grain backing. Flavor has more of the creamy dark grains up front with the roasted malts and coffee coming out strongly in the finish.

Bottle at Gingerman. Pours black with brown head. Nose/taste of day old coffee, roast chocolate malts, mocha and bitter coffee beans. Similar to a mocha coffee left overnight in the pot. Medium body.

Purchased at Armanetti’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a stormy, steamy Thursday May night. Appearance is pitch black, moderate consistentcy, at first pour the head is huge and off white fizzy. Aroma is a fantastic blend of coffee, dark roasted chocolate, mocha. Taste is extremely smooth considering the ABV, rich in chocolate with a light bitterness from the coffee beans. It’s got a touch of sweetness, but for me that touch is just right. I think this is the cats pajamas, 2nd of the 15 anniversary beers I’ve had and both have been fantastic.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 04/05/2012. This brew pours brownish-black with a medium tan head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee and malt. Rich body with a roasted black coffee character and notes of sweet malt and subtle hops in the background. The finish is roasty with a bitter espresso aftertaste. Pretty good beer overall.

Tap at Marshall Stack. Really solid beer. Poured a dark, brown-black with a thick beige head. Nose of dark coffee and chocolate with a flavor that emphasizes those aromas. Nice burnt malt character and lingering, mocha aftertaste.
