12oz bottle (Rock River Red). Filtered brown-amber color. Sweet in your face caramel-butterscotch aroma. Sweet caramel flavor dominates. Relatively smooth, but semi-artificial tastes abound. An APA? It certainly isn’t trying to say it is and doesn’t stumble into that category, or even close. Nasty pungent sugar aftertaste. Not good.

Draft at Berghoff Cafe at O’Hare Airport in Chicago. Labeled Berghoff Famous Amber Ale. Light caramel aroma. Amber color with a bit of off-white head. Medium body with coarsely creamy carbonation. Flavor is caramel with some nice floral? hop. Almost crisp and definitely refreshing.

bottle - Pours light amber with a medium sized head that leaves a touch of lacing. The aroma is light caramel malt. The flavor is sweet caramel malt with some decent, mild hops. I too am confused by the commercial description of an APA. To me it’s an amber. Oh well. It’s light and very easy to drink with just adequate flavor. Not bad.

Wow, this is bad. Flattish, with a touch of caramelly malt flavors and aromas, with a touch of that grape candy that is in some of the better doppelbocks, but it doesn’t work very well in this. Light unpleasant bitterness in the finish. Amberish, no effervescence, no head.

Much more of an Irish ale than an APA. Unimpressive aroma with malt. Red-brown color with no head. Flavor is surprisingly good. There is assertive malt flavor with a hint of sourness. Not complex, just simple and malty. Decent palate; a little oily.

Pour is red, I’ll give them that. No head at all and aroma is cherry-berry. Flavor turns out to be a nice rosted malt but nothing else. This one is super malty! Overall not bad if you like a malty brew. A bit more hops and this could have been a winner.

Draft, at the Berghoff. A light amber color with a light head as expected from a commercial draft. There’s a deep malty taste that wasn’t expected. Just a bit of fruity ale esters, and then a touch of the usual Huber yeast at the finish. Not much hops outside of a simple balance with the malts. Decent enough.

2004 draft at O'Hare! Haha, this was certainly odd to try at an airport. Good yellow-beige color, mildly hazy with a small white head. Aroma is sweet, with tons of caramel. Flavor is equally strong of caramel, very sweet and almost syrupy. Hops and a slight sharpness that is not altogether pleasant. Still, not all that bad and much better than I expected. Pretty tame, unadventurous mouthfeel, smooth, lightly watery with a medium body.
